Molluscs are a separate, lower question, tested not assumed. Clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, and squid are molluscs, a different animal group from crustaceans. Cross-reactivity from crustaceans into the molluscs is real but lower and far less uniform than the crustacean-to-crustacean kind: people allergic to crustaceans do sometimes react to snails and other molluscs through shared tropomyosin, but a crab allergy does not automatically mean a mollusc allergy. This is the place not to guess in either direction. A positive mollusc test is a reason to ask your allergist, not a reason to assume the food is either safe or off-limits, and the page will not tell you that you can eat other shellfish, because the cleared evidence does not support a blanket reassurance.

Dust mites share the same protein, which matters for the nose, not the plate. Tropomyosin is not only in shellfish. House dust mite carries a homologous tropomyosin, and molluscs cross-react with it. For most families this is why a dust-mite-allergic child can test positive to scallop without ever having reacted to it, and it is the reason whole-scallop tests carry false positives. It also carries one specific caution that lives in the exposure section: a shellfish-allergic child who is a candidate for dust-mite allergy shots should have that overlap discussed first, because the shot extract contains the same protein. The mechanism behind that shared protein lives on the tropomyosin syndrome page.

What actually predicts a bad cashew reaction The strongest population-level predictor of a severe cashew reaction is sensitization to Ana o 3, the protein from the components section, and its magnitude (Lange 2017, Dang 2022).

What actually predicts a bad cashew reaction. The strongest population-level predictor of a severe cashew reaction is sensitization to Ana o 3, the protein from the components section, and its magnitude (Lange 2017, Dang 2022). A history of a previous severe reaction is the next strongest input. Cashew has no well-established cofactor syndrome of the kind LTP foods have, so the picture is mostly about the Ana o 3 signal and the history.

If my child is allergic to pine nut, are they allergic to other tree nuts?. Not automatically. Pine nut is a seed, not a true tree nut, and its cross-reactivity to the other tree nuts is limited and inconsistent; some people are allergic to pine nut alone. Whether your child reacts to walnut, cashew, almond, or the rest is a separate question your allergist tests and decides nut by nut, not something the pine-nut result settles (see Cross-reactivity).

These 7 factors showed up again & again in kids who developed food allergies.

Some are genetic.
Some relate to early immune development.
Some may be modifiable.

Spice blends, seasonings, and curry pastes. Mustard, and mustard flour, turn up in compound spice blends, in seasonings, and in curry pastes, where oriental mustard (Brassica juncea) is a common component. On a US label these can legally hide mustard inside a collective term (see Reading labels).

Does a salmon allergy mean my child is also allergic to shrimp and other shellfish?. No, not on that basis. Fish and shellfish are different allergies with different main proteins (parvalbumin in finned fish, tropomyosin in shellfish), and clinical cross-reactivity between them is low, so a fish allergy does not by itself mean a shellfish allergy, though cross-contamination is still possible. See Cross-reactivity.

The other tree nuts are a separate question: tested, not assumed. Whether a brazil-nut-allergic child can eat almond, cashew, hazelnut, walnut, pecan, pistachio, or macadamia is a real and common question, and the honest answer is that it is decided one nut at a time by your allergist, not pulled along automatically by the brazil-nut result. Because brazil nut sits alone in its plant family and is frequently a monosensitization, the panel often turns out narrower than parents fear, which is genuinely encouraging, but that is a reason to test the other nuts rather than to assume them safe. There is no cleared blanket rule in either direction, and this page will not tell you your child can eat the other nuts or that they cannot. Your allergist tests and decides.

My child reacts to wheat only after exercise. What is that?. That pattern is likely WDEIA, wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis: an IgE wheat allergy that fires only when wheat is combined with a cofactor like exercise, an NSAID painkiller, or alcohol. It is still treated epinephrine-first when it happens, and the day-to-day handling is separating wheat from the cofactor (matsuo 2008). Ask your allergist (see Severity, and What wheat allergy is).

Mustard oil, with an important distinction. Cold-pressed, unrefined, and toasted mustard oil retain mustard protein and are a real exposure, common in South Asian cooking. This is different from the reassurance some families have heard about highly refined seed oils: mustard oil in its traditional cold-pressed form is not protein-free, so treat it as a mustard source. When in doubt, treat any mustard oil as a source.

Crab: which protein your child reacts to changes everything. Crab is not one thing to the immune system. It is a handful of proteins, and which one your child reacts to shapes how serious the allergy tends to be. For crab there is one protein that carries most of the weight, and there is also an honest limit to what the blood number can tell you.
