For much too long, there was nothing. Just steadying herself, while a voice inside of her ravenously snarled to break free. When it did, it was commanding, a mandate in everything but law: "Her name is Callista Ashmont, Vice Captain to these fair lands. No force, mortal or divine, has brought her to her knees. Be honored to stand at the end of her blade, and make your peace."

Kaitani Uruëa (The Guardian) I took Kai down one of the alleys that went down to an area where people were playing games of strength, mostly because I knew how to get back here, having been with Maestus just before. -“What’s all this about, ikkin?” He asked. “I need advice.” -“I don’t exactly know what it is I can help with.” “I would like to know how I can let someone know I want to get closer to them, in a romantic way.” -“You think I know?!” Kai blurted. “I mean… you’ve been successful.” -“I don’t think you should intimidate your prospective mate; I think I’m just a special case, ikkin.” “What?” -“Oh, so Casca and I weren’t on good terms thanks to you and Blue and the rest of you, and I had to explain why I didn’t want magical abilities and he did his best to intimidate me.” “I don’t see how that plays a part.” -“I found it arousing,” Kai sounded exasperated. “Oh… no, I don’t think that will work with R’Otem-i,” I admitted. -“The alien with the peculiar eyes?” “Yes.”

Eventually, the light from the sun was too much to hide from and Artemisia forced herself up. Frost crept along the panes of the window, and she looked over the sweeping estate grounds with bleary eyes. A surprise early spring snow had fallen in the night, and it blanketed the courtyard, the lawn, the manicured hedges, all of it. Even the stone statue of her mother looked cold beneath the thin shawl of white clinging to its shoulders. Spring, it seemed, was not quite ready to arrive.

Micah clapped his hands together with a triumphant laugh. Bumblebees and honeybees surrounded him immediately, adding their happy buzzing to his giggles. All around him, flowers sprouted up from the ground. A mix of two white flowers, one the soft petals of eyebright and the other the fluffy spikes of myrtle, surrounded him. He brushed his fingers against them as he picked up an egg. “Funny little things,” he said, grinning.

His head being turned from me, I could see little of his face as he stared towards his exit. But through strands of his long grey hair, the wide venomous grin that spread across his lips was clear as day. His voice rang low, yet strong with a dark finality. “There is no need. I’ve already written your lines, saving you the trouble of speaking them.” He swung open the door. “Goodbye, Jane Sothara. You will be missed.”
