#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 28

I don't like DNFing books but I will do it. I try to give every book a fair shake, and I'll still rate/review if I think I read enough. I stop if (a) I realize I just don't care what happens, (b) gore/bad things happen to animals, (c) the writing doesn't work for me.

Day 28

I used to be against not finishing books. Knowing what hard work goes into a novel, I wanted to give every one a chance. Yet I have a huge TBR pile & only so much time. If it doesn't grab me in 50 pages, I'm done.

Fantasy Indies September with each day of the month listed with its theme. Today is the 28th, and the theme is your thoughts on DNFing books.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember day 28: Thoughts on DNFing books?

I generally try not to so I can at least say I've done it/understand something I've seen referenced before, but ultimately life's too short to force yourself to do things you don't want. Society already makes you do enough of that.

If you are doing something for fun and it stops feeling fun and starts feeling like a chore, just stop. Forcing yourself will just make you go from disliking it to loathing it.

This is true for anything, not just reading.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 28: My thoughts on DNFing books

I once wanted to DNF a Hemingway book and forced myself to finish (for a class). Very much the opposite of reading for pleasure.

If a book becomes a chore, put it aside. Pick up and read a book that makes you happy.

28) Thoughts on DNFing

Life is too short to slog through a book you hate.

Don't like it? DNF that shit. Put it away. Yeet it into the sun.

28. Your thoughts on DNFing books

Life's too short, there are too many books to read, DNF if you want.

That's not a referendum on the quality of the book. It's just not for me, or it's not for me now. The book has other people who appreciate it. It won't miss me.

Thoughts on DNFing books

If a book isn't working for you, it's okay to stop reading it. Reading should be enjoyable/fun, and forcing a read when it's not for you will turn it into a chore.

27) I've done a lot of research about different ways that elite boarding schools work...since I've never been anywhere near one. #FantasyIndiesSeptember

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 27: Research

I try to research specific elements for the world before I start writing (see: ancient Incan mythology for the current WIP) & make notes as I draft unless it keeps me from moving forward. Lots of web searches & library time (thank God for @libbyapp.com)

27: What research do you do for your writing?

Largely depends on the story. For Bloodmaster #4 I was researching fencing and the harvest times of some fruits. For another book I was researching poisons.

There was a magical time when I researched history and science facts in my Encyclopedia Britannica on CD-ROM.

Day 27 of #FantasyIndiesSeptember

The amount of research I've done for my Oracle of Delphi series WIP is ... ginormous. The pic below is just 1 bookcase of books I've read on ancient Greece and Rome. There's another room that has 3 more bookcases plus piles stacked everywhere.

Research done for writing
For Mielea's Lost, I have looked up recovery times for busted eardrums.
Watched animal behavior videos. The most interesting were honey badgers.
Some medical equipment terms too since some characters are medics. #writesky #Sci-Fi #fantasy šŸ’™šŸ“š

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 27: What research do you do for your writing? Not much. Most of what I look up is little factoids like how far a horse can run in a certain amount of time, how much blood is in the human body, the physical properties of fire. Also reading folklore. #WritingCommunity

Lately most of my research has been into names to try and build the cast for SCC while I’m working on the 2nd half of Bards and Brooches.
