What is also great is you can take a pattern at the beginning of the year, explore it, then revisit it in a few months when you've learned something new in Algebra class that pertains.
I have a set of "triangle growing patterns" that have lots of depth & connections

But SO beautiful when they have a moment like this. "But, wait, you mean you can [do that]?? Lemme try one!" #ElemMathChat

A3: I love any game where kids have to count. Path board games with dice, but also mancala's a good one.
Desert Island Math!!!! 🤣 #ElemMathChat
And so that they HAVE power - they can dig into things with numbers and explain them and not rely on others to explain it. (Unfortunately, sometimes those other folks don't have your best interests in mind...) #ElemMathChat
One Too Many: A Seek & Find Counting Book written and illustrated by Gianna Marino is visual candy. The book encourages children to see specific numbers within increasingly complex pictures. I love to use this book to discuss “cumulative total” with teachers. #ElemMathChat
A5 2 of 2 part 2 Our friend @sueoconnellmath.bsky.social has currated these amazing books too! padlet.com/sueoc46/math... #ElemMathChat
Yes! Just today I was working with elementary teachers doing work like this. Jaws were literally dropping. It’s such a shame how many people in our world don’t know how you can work with numbers to help computing them make more sense and be more efficient. #elemmathchat
One Family by George Shannon and illustrated by Blanca Gómez allows conversations about unitizing to begin. The book explores ideas such as “One is five” meaning five bananas constitute one bunch. #ElemMathChat
Yes! Thank you for being here, David! #ElemMathChat
And big props to both Pam & Howie for explaining "why it works" .

I *KNEW* you were going to post this! So glad you did. Such a great resource for all of us. :) #ElemMathChat
A4: So many, but one I want to mention here is how much I LOVE a rekenrek for K-2. The relationships we can explore on this tool are insane. SO good. #elemmathchat

A2: Ask "How Many?" all the time. All the time.
I love the way you use the word "power." I'm always talking with teachers about how we can empower our students to take responsibility for their learning and growth in math. #ElemMathChat
A5 I literally have about 1,000 children's books. I have most of them cataloged on this sheet. They are ALL my favorites! LOL! #ElemMathChat docs.google.com/spreadsheets...
When we had the Problems of the Week at #TheMathForum, my brain got SO much bigger by not using algebraic representations all the time for the Gr3-5 and Gr6-8 problems. It was magic! #ElemMathChat
@kimmontague.bsky.social I tell them it is "desert island math" with no phone or calculator.
Try to share more than 1 way to do 6 x 150 for example. Hoping they will be more flexible/faster next time bc they have more strategies in their math toolbox.

Hi David! So great to see you! #ElemMathChat
