To the south of Montreux is Château de Chillon is a castle which stands on a small island. Walking around, the castle is nice and worth checking out, however what makes this castle worth visiting is the views and its location.

Two audiences, not one. Joan of Arc reached Chinon in February 1429 and met Charles VII privately on the 25th. The public scene painters chose came weeks later, after Poitiers. That hall is now a fireplace open to the sky. https://stonekeepatlas.com/castles/chateau-de-chinon/ #Castles #History

The Deutsche Burgenvereinigung calls Marksburg the only hilltop castle on the Middle Rhine never destroyed, and the qualifier does the work. Undestroyed is not undamaged: a 1705 fire took the keep's cap, US shells hit it in 1945. Repeat it with the qualifier. #Castles #History

In 1814 Mary Godwin's boat tied up at Gernsheim, 16 kilometers from Burg Frankenstein. Her novel has no castle in it, and a historian only floated the link in 1975. The chapel holds a better subject: a real Georg von Frankenstein, carved treading a dragon. Go find him instead. #Castles #History

Bodo Ebhardt rebuilt Haut-Kœnigsbourg for Wilhelm II between 1900 and 1908 and refused to hide the seam. Every replacement block carries a mason's mark, and the marks form an eight-year calendar, 1901 to 1908. Walk it with your eyes down. The stones say who laid them. #Castles #History

For #WallsOnWednesday, #WindowsOnWednesday. The magnificent Renaissance exterior of the Royal Palace at Stirling Castle in Scotland (2024). #Stirling #castles #photography #photographersofbluesky #palace #royalpalace #Scotland #EastCoastKin #ECK #WCK

The weathered stone facade is highly ornate, showcasing French-inspired Renaissance design blending with local craftsmanship. A series of distinct, carved stone figures and pillars rest between and above the large recessed window bays. These sculptures traditionally represent classical gods, goddesses, and mythological figures commissioned during the reign of King James V.

How Château Gaillard, in Normandy, fell in 1204, and how the story drifted. (1/3) A squire named Bogis found a low, unbarred window near the bottom of the ditch. Guillaume le Breton, Philip Augustus's chaplain and in his pay, is the only eyewitness who wrote it down. #Castles #History

Eilean Donan Castle looks medieval and is mostly 1912 to 1932. Three Royal Navy frigates blew the original apart in May 1719, and it lay in rubble for two centuries until John MacRae-Gilstrap rebuilt it. The bridge is part of the rebuild. Restoration, or a new castle? Argue it. #Castles #History

Called away on a secret mission, he left his spell books behind….

Book Magic

In the foreground is an open book with the page it’s open at marked by a bright red bookmark. On the left of the open book are 2 smaller books, along with a few other odds & ends. Behind the open book are 2 larger books. Both are stacked one on top of the other & kept in a decorative bookcase with a huge abstract carving on top of it. Behind the carving is a castle surrounded by planets & moons & looking a bit Harry Potter-ish (which is why my 1st thought was of witches, wizards & all other magical things)

The open book sits on top of a wooden worktop of some kind. The worktop looks battered & old

Montségur fell in 1244. Château de Quéribus held 11 more years on its spur above Cucugnan in the Corbières, 728 meters up, until Chabert de Barbaira was captured and surrendered it in May 1255. By most accounts the last Cathars had already gone. So who was still inside? #Castles #History

You know the photograph: a long neck, flat Loch Ness water, nothing to size it by. The Daily Mail ran it April 21, 1934. Christian Spurling owned up before he died in 1993: plastic wood on a toy sub. Later Nessie pictures are framed against Urquhart Castle. Did you believe it? #Castles #History

Château de Falaise is visited for William the Conqueror, probably born in the town in 1028. Almost nothing standing is his. The great tower was built for his son Henry I about 1123, the round tower for Philip Augustus after 1204, the entrance is 1996 concrete. Still worth it? #Castles #History

Iron tie-bars run through the masonry at the Château de Vincennes, east of Paris, so 50 meters of stone would not split under its weight. Charles V moved into the donjon around 1367, while the masons still worked. Would you have moved in before the builders left? #Castles #History #Medieval
