day 16 - steel

amaris is mentally preparing to face off against the gnath’s god, and estinien notices that something is off about her

It is the early morning and Amaris cannot sleep. Nerves pull at every fiber of her being at what the coming days will hold. A battle against a primal. A battle she is all but sure she could lose. The hunters of Tailfeather have been up since before the sunrise and they pay no mind to her as she sits on Marchechamp's porch. She doesn't keep that privacy for long, the Azure Dragoon joining her in her solitude. Ser Estinien has been eyeing her since their meeting with Vidofnir. A virtues of his statue, she is sure, that he is able to garner such close observation. It's always a curious stare — an examination of something that you have gone over with a fine tooth comb. "Good morning, Ser Estinien." She offers politely. Amaris does not hate the man, but she will not deny his quirks. The ones that cause unnecessary strife within their band of hopefuls and swift victories against their enemies on the road to Hraesvelgr. "Aye." He replies simply before taking his place at their now shared vigil. Amaris feels her brow begin to furrow. Another element of his quirks is that he has the gift of making even the smallest of moments feel awkward.She clears her throat before pushing herself to her feet. "I'll wake the others?" Ser Estinien shakes his head before sticking out his arm. "Not yet, lass." Amaris looks at him confused, her head cocking to the side hesitantly. "If there is something we should know before attempting Master Alphinaud's plan, you are to tell us." He instructs, his tone pointed. "I don't know what you mean." Amaris says as her heart rate rises and her body heats up. She thinks of her blessing - barely there and not nearly enough. He couldn't possibly know about that. How could he know about that? "From the moment it was decided that we would lay low the Gnath's God, you have been... uneasy," He settles on the word. "By virtue of the Lord Commander's words, I did not think you easy to frighten." Amaris freezes. She does not care what Ser Estinien thinks, yet she prickles at the thought of being seen as incapable."It's not an easy task, even for me." She replies as if there is nothing further to say on the topic. "I did not say it would be." Ser Estinien clarifies, sharp before pushing himself off the wall. "Keep your secrets if you will, I will not pry." Amaris releases a breath at his retreat, so much so that she almost says thank you for it. She waits for a moment after he rounds the corner before allowing herself to sink back down to her seat on the porch. It Ser Estinien can tell she is hesitant, she can only imagine how soon Alphinaud and Ysayle will come to share the same observations. She has to be better, to be stronger for the days ahead. Her fingers clasp in front of her as she mutters softly into the morning air. She whispers Hydaelyn's name and wishes for Her help — for Her to relight Her blessing and all the gifts that come with it. There is no answer and Amaris all but whispers in her mind that she will have to make do.
