I found this late born Cicada this morning, drying its wings on a pepper plant which is a bit odd, they usually climb the side of a tree on real bark. 🌱

Starting with the moths, of which, there are many!
Have you ever seen a dogbane tiger moth in person before?

A bumblebee so chunky and fresh looking she must be one of the new queens who will hibernate over winter and emerge to get things started again in spring. After she has spent tge autumn fuelling up of course 🌱🐝

A yellow, white, and brown butterfly drinks from a light purple flower. The Yellow Albatross grabs hold of French lavender and appears to be shielded from the bright sun. The butterfly’s fore wing catches the light and reflects bright yellow—a tell that she is in fact a female.

A wasp resting in profile on a bright yellow wildflower, featuring a black head and thorax intricately marked with yellow stripes. Its abdomen displays striking, segmented yellow and black bands with a dimpled texture. Its slender yellow legs are planted firmly on the brown, textured disc florets of the blossom, and its smoky, translucent amber wings are folded flat over its back. The backdrop is a clean, dark blend of muted forest green and out-of-focus yellow petals.

Happy #waspwednesday!
Here is a crabronid wasp (Liris argentatus) hunting for crickets in my yard this past weekend.

Native mantises! 👽 Went out looking for cicadas, and instead saw my very first non-invasive mantis (the Carolina mantis, Stagmomantis carolinensis, the only mantis native to Illinois)...as a mating pair! 😍 Only had my phone, but here's our couple. Total delight. Good luck, kids... #bugsky

A pair of mating Stagmomantis carolina, the only mantis native to Illinois. The female is about twice the weight of the male, robust and highly camouflaged, brown with spots and a few muted stripes. The male, mounting her, is smaller, with dark brown-black wings and bright green legs. They blend into the tree bark they're on very well.

An Eastern carpenter bee. Those extra bumps between the compound eyes are more eyes!

Called ocelli, they are simple eyes with only one lens. Cool right? What does the world look like to them?
