Drought has worsened in Maine amid continued dryness, with low streamflows and well levels observed. Extreme drought also emerged along the Maine coastline this week.

USDM Hot Topic September 17, 2026: Maine. All of Maine is in drought this week, up from 77.37% last week. Severe drought or worse increased from 16.02% to 19.29%. Extreme drought was introduced this week, covering 4.92% of the state. The Drought Severity and Coverage Index increased from 193 to 224 of 500. The graphic includes the current Drought Monitor map for Maine, and the Drought Monitor time series for January 4, 2000, through September 17, 2026. Taking a look at the latest U.S. Drought Monitor, it has not been a pleasant summer for the Southern Plains and Rocky Mountains mainly due to record low snowpack and persistent areas of high pressure. As a result, the #drought is accelerating the timing of #fall foliage in the Rockies 🍂☀️

The Lower 48 and Alaska saw a mix of improvement and degradation to dryness or drought conditions this week. Hawaii and Puerto Rico saw some improvement.
