Macro color image of a hoverfly dusted in pollen. The Shasta daisy’s long white petals are out of focus and fill up most of the frame while the solitary hoverfly, in focus, forages on the bright golden center disc.

I must be really crushing it with my forest clearing garden lately — a meadow fritillary was visiting today. These are less of a generalist yard butterfly and are more specialists of wet meadows. Uncommon in MA, I’d never actually seen one before. #habitatgardening #bugsky 🦋

Peripitus, or velvet worms are such ancient worms that they still have legs! You can find these cuties under rotting logs in wet places in the forests. They may be small and squishy, but they are a formidable predator in the invertebrate world.

Macro of a caterpillar captured in a striking head-on portrait that forms a defensive snake mimicry posture. The swollen green thorax features a smooth, lime-green coloration divided by a fine vertical line down the center. Two massive, round false eyespots dominate the sides, displaying a black center rimmed by a thin brown band and encircled by a thick white border to simulate the eyes of a serpent. Faint, pale yellow stripes sweep downward beneath the markings toward its hidden head. The background is completely dark and smoothly out of focus, heavily isolating the graphic features of the illusion.

How can you keep fruit flies out of the kitchen? @umdentomology.bsky.social's Kelly Hamby and Mike Raupp spoke with Martha Stewart Magazine to help shed some light on the answer. #BugSky

Morning Glaucina moths on pungent Yellow Rabbitbrush. Few pollinators left on these cool mornings. But Rabbitbrush is the only pollen-nectar juice around these waning summer days.

"Autumn delight"
Truth be told, I'm not a huge fan of Tansy, as a garden flower. The plant grows ridiculously tall, then collapses. The flowers are, well, not spectacular. The scent is... peculiar. But the pollinators love it, so...

My niece is really into bugs; when I visited recently she pointed out different bugs she wanted me to photograph, including bringing one to me at one point.

Hush little baby, don’t you sting,
Mama’s gonna make you a gall-like thing
If that gall-like thing’s too soft,
Well tough cause you’re an Oak Rosette Gall Wasp
If you don’t wanna be a gall wasp,
At least you don’t parasitize any moths

What time is it? It’s #Cheliceratime & #FossilFriday!
For this entry we're talking about a recently named polish horseshoe crab!

All the basic infos are here but if you want to learn more, there’s more in the thread below!⬇️🧵

#horseshoecrab #triassic #paleoart #poland #sciart #bugsky
1/3

This species, with its super enlarged genal spines, is the oldest horseshoe crab found in Poland, and is another piece in the puzzle of how these animals were extremely successful after the Permian-Triassic mass extinction.

Size : 10-ish cm of body length
Time period : Early Triassic
Paleoart speculativometer : Few missing details

The animal drawn is a horseshoe crab but with super large and narrow elongations of its head part on its sides

Happy #Flyday! Here is a little black Lauxanid fly, I believe genus Xenochaetina, from back in April when they were all over the place.

#flyfriday #bugsky #diptera

Fly with shiny black body, short sparse hairs, yellowish wings folded over body, medium sized red eyes, short orange antenna. Kind of hunched over on a green leaf.
