Strangely, the Name, Nationality and Date of Birth for @wsocial.eu leadership team inc. @anna.wsocial.eu @ingmar.wsocial.eu @aslan.wsocial.eu @petter.wsocial.eu and @sundstrand.wsocial.eu and all advisory board members remain empty. Don't they believe in their product?

#Wsocial will eure Daten haben!

New day, new #WSocial controversy 🚩

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, W Social appears to be pulling a card out of the U2/Apple playbook: almost all new accounts now automatically follow @wow.wsocial.eu... an empty account that never posted! 👻

@wow.wsocial.eu Is the account that hosts most of #wsocial client feeds.

There is nothing creepy or dangerous with that account.

If users are automatically set to follow it on account creation, easily unfollowed.

Why the drama about a benign account?

You can not steal an open source app! Period!

No, you cannot technically "steal" the underlying code of an open-source app because it is intentionally made public for anyone to view, download, and use. However, you can illegally infringe upon its copyright or violate its licensing terms, which the developer community and the law often treat as theft.
How the legal boundaries work depends on the context:
1. License Violations (Legal "Theft")
Every legitimate open-source application comes with an open-source license. If you use the code but break the rules of that license, you are committing copyright infringement and can be sued:
• Permissive Licenses (e.g., MIT, BSD): These allow you to do almost anything, including selling the app or turning it into private, closed-source software. However, you must still include the original creator's copyright notice and attribution. If you strip their name off and claim you built it from scratch, you are violating the license.
• Copyleft Licenses (e.g., GNU GPL, AGPL): These require that any modified or distributed version of the app must also remain open-source. If you take a GPL-licensed app, tweak it, and try to sell it as a locked-down, proprietary application, you are breaking the law.
2. Trademark and Branding Theft
While the code is free to copy, the branding, logo, and name of the application are usually protected by trademark law. You can copy the code of an app like Firefox or Signal, but you cannot compile it, put it on an app store, and call it "Firefox" or "Signal." You must strip out all their official branding first (a process known as "forking").
3. Apps with No License
If a developer puts their app's source code on a public platform like GitHub but forgets to include a license file, you cannot legally touch it. By default, copyright laws grant the creator exclusive rights. Copying an unlicensed project and republishing it is direct copyright theft, and the creator can issue a standard DMCA takedown notice to have your version removed.
