Yes, it does. The details may be different but the effect is the same - the reader figures out quickly what's going on without me having to hold up a big neon sign saying DATE!!! LOL #WomenWritersNet

A4 #WomenWritersNet Given the circumstances, that seems like a fair concern. However, it does help your work seem more realistic, too.
A4 #WomenWritersNet I'm not super worried, as I'm not planning to write something futuristic or in a #SciFi vein. But I need to plan the events that create changes so the storyline makes sense.
A4 #WomenWritersNet I mostly worry that my book will get overtaken by real life. I started work on this before the pandemic- when lock inβs were not ordinary- then they became ordinary! Although mine are different, but there were some crossovers.
A4- I have no particular concerns or challenges about writing about the future - I do believe at this moment in time the lack is interest.

It can be hard to do since typing out a date is so easy. I don't like slamming a date over the reader's head unless I have a good reason for it. Using entertainment, appliances, etc., also makes it much more fun. :) #WomenWritersNet
A4 I think this is partly why I don't choose settings in the future - I'm not sure I trust myself to invent something properly coherent. My daughter does a lot of world building for fantasy and sci fi settings and the complexity boggles my mind. I'll stick to what I know. π #WomenWritersNet
A3 - I used a particular brand of urban decay in a story, remnants of LED screen film clinging to walls, old interactive advertisements popping up for companies long gone, defunct cabling everywhere #WomenWritersNet
A2 #WomenWritersNet I can't force a timeline or I get stuck. When I get frustrated or bored, I know the story sucks. I usually start with plot then characters. Timeline comes while I'm developing those two.
A2 #WomenWritersNet I love the idea of a story that just draws you in. It's also understandable that some stories are too real to be comfortable to continue.
A2: #WomenWritersNet I tend to write what the story wants me to write. I write horror. Those stories tend to be set in the present, sometimes the past. I haven't written much that's set in the future except one or two short erotica stories over a decade ago. Some of it came true!
A2 #WomenWritersNet If a suitable idea appears, it might be worth trying it out.

Q4 What challenges or concerns do you have with the realism of setting your writing in the future? #WomenWritersNet
A2 #WomenWritersNet I tend to agree here--if the story wants the future, that's where we go!
A2 #WomenWritersNet That makes a lot of sense. Some people are committed to #Writing about the future, some of us find our way there because the story demands it.
#WomenWritersNet A3: Sometimes I post the date. Sometimes I'll refer to well-known past events. I'll also include laws, jobs, gender roles, appliances, entertainment and such that give a future feel - as in you know this isn't current or is in an alternate timeline.

A2 #WomenWritersNet I think you and @anna-orridge.bsky.social are in agreement that there's a great deal of worry involved with contemplating the future and that #Writing about it makes it more manageable. I think some #Writers also like to lean into warning us about how things can get worse, too.
