#hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes it made sense that he wasn't necessarily trying to make sense either, he was just writing whatever he could come up with with whatever he had.

#hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes i kind of stopped reading some of the Chinese translations because they were hard to catch up with so quickly/some of them felt nonsensical and were hard to make sense of but overall i really enjoyed the experience of listening to his work

It showed me that being creative sometimes means trying something unfamiliar. #hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes

Before listening to Yingelishi, I thought translation was mostly about changing words from one language to another while keeping the same meaning. Now I realize that sounds, emotions, and the way something is performed can also be important parts of translation. #hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes

This experience made me realize that you don't always need to understand every word to appreciate something. Even when I couldn't fully follow the story, I could still listen to the voices and music and get something out of the performance. #hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes

As the performance went on, especially toward the end, I started to get confused about what was happening. I realized that I was focusing so much on trying to understand the words that I wasn't paying as much attention to the music and the emotions being expressed. #hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes

When I first started listening to Yingelishi, I was trying to understand the story and follow what was happening. I thought it was interesting how the music and different languages worked together, but it was also different from anything I had listened to before. #hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes

Maybe I could even use this idea to craft different meanings, purposefully creating something new. Just like what is done with Yingelishi. Rather than a battle between Chinese and English, it is a peculiar fusion of the two. #hwa #whatlisteningmakes

I can definitely use this in SME2 by being more conscientious of what my audience hears rather than focusing entirely on the words on the page. If there is a clash between the two, the intended meaning could be fully lost. #hwa #whatlisteningmakes

At a certain point in the reading, I just stopped trying to read the Chinese poem and focused completely on the English phonetics. This could mean that auditory stimuli overpower visual when they clash? #hwa #whatlisteningmakes

Yingelishi demonstrated the dissonance that can be created between audio and words. Trying to listen while reading completely different meanings was challenging and disrupted the way I thought I would understand the work. #hwa #whatlisteningmakes

#hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes i was no longer able to try to listen and understand at the same time because i was distracted by the different sound/instrument in the background that i wasn't expecting. i would like to know if that is an expectation of the SME, to incorporate a sound that distracts.

@silvanatalia444.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:11 PM

#hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes the multiple angles of language and sound, but not so much that the reader/listener gets lost in translation, as they say. When the Yingelishi audio forever, covered the speaker's voice with a bass instrutment, I, as the listener, lost connection with the audio

@silvanatalia444.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:11 PM

#hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes At a certain point, i did convince myself that there were too many sounds I didn't understand to process the language behind it. This makes me wonder in my future SME's if i would be using too many sounds or too little sounds. It's obviously important to incorporate

@silvanatalia444.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:11 PM

#hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes because i had the english translation on the screen, I was able to follow along and think I heard what I was reading. Was that my mind adapting to this new language i was trying to hear and understand or did the language have some things in common with what I already knew

@silvanatalia444.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:11 PM

#hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes Yingelishi makes me wonder if the speaker actually knew English or if they were trying to express or show that they didn't know English and simply translated from their native language. there were moments where I questioned if I was truly able to understand Yingelishi

@tommyf07.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:09 PM

A question that left behind would be why would she turn this into a song and specifically with traditional Chinese music. What deeper idea is she trying to express or reach. #hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes

@tommyf07.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:08 PM

A possibility it opened is we could potentially live without translation or “Chinglish” what if translation was never right? Can human communicate just based on tones and sounds? It might be a possibility. #hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes

@tommyf07.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:06 PM

It disrupted me because I realize that those will never match. Neither of the translation (Chinese) nor the singing (English) make sense. It would never make sense unless you just feel it without adding anything in your mind and just admire the music itself. #hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes
