'Ye'll find Mary and Tam in ther bothie up by they twa staunin stanes.'
Shieling bothy and two upright stones, prob. not neolithic but good identifiers in the landscape and not used for building. It doesn't stop them having some significance.

As it’s the first #StandingStoneSunday of October, here’s a suitably witchy reminder of my latest book…

To stand inside a stone circle is to be enfolded by the Long Neolithic. To stand inside a stone circle is also to be enfolded by folklore and a sense of awe. Archaeology is a telling of stories, we do not pretend that our stories are the only ones that matter. – Dr. K. Brophy #StandingStoneSunday

The forge stone in the south west quadrant of Avebury. So called as it was partially reconstructed circa 1938 from fragments of stone reclaimed from the village forge.

A while ago I said I might post about modern Stonehenge myths, some of which pop up frequently in all manner of places, including stuff written by actual archaeologists. So – to begin with, the old chestnut about (allegedly) being able to hire a hammer when visiting Stonehenge. #StandingStoneSunday

A colour photo showing two of the trilithons at Stonehenge, with a few other stones visible. In the foreground is a sign saying "No Admittance", while in between the two upright sarsens of one trilithon is an orange and white traffic cone.

The ancient stone at Harry's Walls on St Mary's stands next to a modern daymark, the two seeming to work in synchrony. Maybe the stone itself was used as a marker by boats in prehistoric times. You can actually see it from the water in pic 2 ... Look for daymark's cross! #StandingStoneSunday

The menhir of Le Repaire in Esse (Charente) is 2.65m tall. An inventory from 1844 records that a follower of Charlemagne burned candles around it in 789. Card by Dupuis in Angoulême. #StandingStoneSunday.

Appropriate for #StandingStoneSunday:
The Pipers: turned to stone for playing tunes on a Sunday.
The Hurlers: 3 stone circles of men who had same fate for playing hurling on Lord's Day.
That'll teach 'em.

Evocative late Neolithic/early Bronze Age ceremonial landscape on Bodmin Moor.
#Archaeology 🏺

Two standing stones in a bumpy green and brown landscape with gorse, boggy bits and lowering stormy sky. Part of a lichen covered stone circle on green and brown Bodmin Moor. In the background is a pit head building and a hill with a tall transmission tower on top. Lowering storm clouds overhang the view.
