New episode: Hill Repeats. How Percy Cerutty's 80-foot sandhill at Portsea built Herb Elliott into an unbeaten miler—and why loose dune that "steals its own power" beats any track workout. Elliott won 1960 Olympic 1500m by 20 metres. Listen now. #Running #HillRepeats #RunningHistory #TheLongRun

The modern Olympics staged a men's marathon in 1896 but made women wait until 1984 — an 88-year gap on the same distance. Joan Benoit won it, and the tidy "triumph" version leaves a lot out.

Hill repeats get sold as timeless training wisdom, but the method was contested and cobbled together long before anyone agreed it worked. The tidy origin story leaves out the arguments. That's usually where the interesting part lives.

Everyone treats VO2 max as the thing hill repeats train. But in 2013 Barnes and Kilding found the 5K gains in already-trained runners came from running economy instead — how efficiently you use oxygen, not how much you can take in. The argument never really got #RunningHistory #TheLongRun

Percy Cerutty had his runners charge a steep sand dune at Portsea while the coaching world drilled tidy track intervals. It looked like crankery. Then Herb Elliott went unbeaten at the mile and 1500m. #Running #RunningHistory #Cerutty #TheLongRun

New episode: the 1984 Decker–Budd collision. We dig into the film the IAAF jury actually reviewed to reinstate Budd that same night—and why nobody remembers Puică won gold in Olympic-record time. The fall erased the race. Listen now. #trackandfield #Olympics #running #RunningHistory #TheLongRun

Percy Cerutty didn't believe in tracks. He drove his athletes up a sand dune at Portsea until they broke — and it produced world records and an unbeaten Olympic champion. Hill repeats started as something much stranger than a workout. #Running #RunningHistory #Cerutty #TheLongRun

Everyone remembers Zola Budd tripping Mary Decker. Officials cleared Budd of fault — Decker clipped her from behind. The barefoot 17-year-old got booed anyway, fast-tracked into British citizenship to dodge the apartheid ban. #Running #OlympicHistory #RunningHistory #TheLongRun

Nurmi ran with a stopwatch in his hand, but the pacing obsession wasn't his invention — it came from the coaches and physiologists who tested and drilled him. The "Flying Finn" was a system, not a lone genius.

Nine Olympic golds, and the IAAF still barred him from the 1932 Games — over appearance money, weeks before Los Angeles. Finland's greatest runner watched the marathon from the stands. The ban was never fully explained. #Running #RunningHistory #Olympics #TheLongRun
