Vintage Judy-Lee clip-on earring. It's missing its center jewel but still has 8 jewels around the center: red, clear, green, yellow, red, clear, green, yellow (going clockwise from about the center left). Those 8 jewels are surrounded by approximately 4 loops of faux gold roping. The entire thing is about 1 inch in diameter (a good size for an earlobe cover). Its mate is the same size and configuration - and also missing its center jewel. I'd never heard of Judy-Lee Jewelry before finding and buying these earrings online for a whopping $2.50. A bit of research tells me that the company was started in Chicago in 1949 by Blanche and Aldo Viano. Apparently they sold through home sales parties rather than stores (at least at first). They did ok in the 1950s and 1960s but shut down in 1972 - so this earring must have been made over 50 years ago. A fine example of elderly aunt jewelry, I'd say. Perhaps I'll donate it to the Smithsonian.

American Gold Eagle Millennium coin. It shows Lady Liberty holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The word "LIBERTY" appears at the top while a distant view of the US Capitol appears at the lower left. The year 2000 is displayed towards the lower right, hence the coin's Millennium name. The coin measures about 0.65 of an inch in diameter while the plastic case that it's sealed in measures 1 inch. The coin allegedly contains a tenth of an ounce of gold along with much smaller amounts of silver and copper to strengthen it. It carries a nominal value of 5 dollars. Since it was minted by the US government I could actually go to a store and use it as a 5 dollar coin if I wanted to but the gold in it is worth rather more than 5 that, so no. Although I wish I could say that I spend my days lounging in silk pajamas and wiggling my toes in mounds of these coins, the sad fact is that this is the only one I have - a gift that I received from an uncle 25 years ago. I keep it in the bottom of my cookie jar. Should I ever entirely run out of cookies and reach into that jar and touch this coin instead, I shall immediately sell it and buy more cookies. Back side of the American Gold Eagle Millennium coin. It shows an eagle returning to its nest where another adult eagle and two eaglets await it. The returning eagle is carrying an olive branch, which I imagine must be a helluva disappointment to the hungry eaglets. The words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" appear across the top. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" can be seen at the left center while "IN GOD WE TRUST" can be seen unironically at the center right. At the bottom one finds "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD - 5 DOLLARS". Really, it's not much to look at, and gold has never been my thing. You can't drink it, you can't eat it, it doesn't purr when you pet it, and it never returns your kisses. It's hard to wrap my head around the fact that people have nonetheless been fighting each other for thousands of years to possess it. But then I also prefer candy to diamonds, so maybe I'm just an idiot. (I'll know for sure if the test I sent away for back in 2015 ever comes.)

Top view of a key ring attachment/fob that's a perfect replica of a classic Coleman camping lantern. Forest green plastic with a raised loop in the center to accommodate a metal chain. An inch in diameter. The lantern stands 2 inches high and has a little light in the center that actually works if I have a working battery in the base - which I don't. It takes one of those oddly numbered little round batteries that I never have on hand. Those batteries probably cost more than the lantern itself did - and there's no guarantee that the light would come on even if a got one. So, no little camping trips for me. If I ever go camping it'll have to be to a camp big enough to accommodate my full-size lantern. Such is life. Fortunately, I have stoicism to spare tonight.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) right control pad upgrade. I posted a photo of the original control pad with its light purple and dark purple buttons back on August 5. I got this improved version (made by ASCiiWARE) in the late 1990s several years after acquiring the first. The improved version has a green Y button, a blue X button, a yellow B button, and a red A button. As with the original, these buttons measure half an inch in diameter and are set inside a gray circle that measures 2 inches in diameter. Although these colors did absolutely nothing to boost my gaming skills, I ended up enjoying the games more. Because the control pad was less boring, the games themselves came to seem less boring and I was therefore more likely to play them. Which inspires me to make this modest suggestion: If we really want to boost voter turnout, maybe we should make the paper and electronic ballets much more colorful and fun. We'll probably still lose much more often than we win but at least we'll have experienced the transcendent joy that comes from seeing some damn fine eye candy.

Multi-colored metal nose ring. About half an inch in diameter. Silly me - I thought everyone with a nose ring had a pierced nose, but no. I discovered last week that there are lots and lots and LOTS of rings that require NO piercing at all! Works on the ear, too. So of course once I learned this, I had to get one (plus 17 others that came as part of the group). Can't wait to show off for my mail carrier tomorrow! (If I get good mail, maybe I'll wear two rings on Tuesday!)

Loudspeaker for an Admiral 5-tube tabletop AM radio (model 5S22N). The radio was made in about 1953. The speaker is 5 inches in diameter. I can only imagine the sounds that may have come out through it in the years before it came into my possession a decade or more ago. Music. Baseball games. News reports. Witty commercials. Tired jokes. Maybe somewhere in all the late night static a few words of wisdom made their way from the pulsating black paper into eagerly awaiting ears. Maybe if I place my own ears close enough to the black paper now some lingering residual wisdom can still be heard. Then again, maybe there's a bit of current still there just waiting for its chance to electrocute me. Hmmmm, how much of a risk should one be willing to take for a chance to increase one's knowledge? (Making a note to return to this question sometime when the cookies in the kitchen aren't calling my name quite so loudly.)

Close-up view of a white, self-sticking, notebook paper hole reinforcement. Measures half an inch in diameter. It was 1 of 560 reinforcements in a pack I bought a long time ago at Woolworth's for $2.19 (not including sales tax). The pack contained 14 sheets with 40 reinforcements on a sheet. Until I started photographing them for this post I had used precisely 1 reinforcement (for some reason I forgot long ago). Apparently I thought I was going to have more problems with holes in my future than turned out to be the case. I can recall being very attracted to the self-sticking feature. Older hole reinforcements were dreadful little things that required a good tongue licking that inevitably left the reinforcement attached to a finger rather than anything resembling paper. If I did ever manage to eventually get a licked reinforcement onto paper it tended to fall off once it had dried. The discovery of self-sticking reinforcements rekindled my faith in human ingenuity and progress. And then everything went electronic and digital and notebook paper was put aside except for those increasingly rare moments when I was in the mood to make a paper airplane that never seriously threatened Boeing's share of the airliner business. I'm still keeping the self-sticking reinforcements though. My intuition tells me I might be able to trade them for food and water after the AI apocalypse.

When I was a child the route of the bus I often took went right by a Sinclair station that displayed a sign much like this one, only larger. It quickly became a landmark in my mind. I would look forward to seeing it every time I rode the bus. It always managed to charm and fascinate me at every time of day, in all kinds of weather, and in all seasons. Years passed. At some point the sign and the station disappeared, never to return. The area that the station occupied as well as the block it was on and the adjacent blocks have been so completely redeveloped that it's impossible to say now exactly where Dino once hung. Sinclair long ago left my state. If Dino still hangs anywhere, it is many, MANY miles away. When I had a chance to buy this replica, I seized it. It was a way of recapturing my youth and of inducing a warm, nostalgic smile. Then in the course of researching Sinclair for this post I learned that it was the company involved in the famous Teapot Dome scandal. I also learned that the company went on to have a very cozy relationship with Mussolini. I guess the moral of the story is that if you want to do Very Bad Things, it's really helpful to be able to hide behind a cute cartoon mascot. (You think I would have learned this lesson after I caught Tony the Tiger rotting my teeth, but nooooo. *Sigh*)
