Day 11 at #NYFF64: Pawel Pawlikowski's Fatherland is an austere drama, just 71 mins + credits, about Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika returning to Germany in 1949 and having to confront a shattered country and a shattered family. It's so tightly controlled it almost feels curated scene by scene.>
Back at #NYFF64 for the 3rd day watching a conversation between two of my favorite directors.

How could I not pair ELSINORE, which opens the 70th London Film Festival on Wednesday, with THE MAN I LOVE, screening this week in New York?
Lisandro Alonso’s sequel to La Libertad, DOUBLE FREEDOME, suggests that not much has changed for Argentine woodcutter Misael Saavedra in the intervening quarter century. The film has its U.S. premiere today at #NYFF64. shorturl.at/LuH0U

After seeing Fjord a second time, I unfortunately came away liking it even less. I understand a little more of what the movie is going for, but it still just didn’t connect with me the way I hoped it would.
For week 2 of the #NYFF64 I give you the exceptionally rare #LetterboxdFriday... ON #MOVIEMONDAY! Insane. Very pumped about three of these #LastFourWatched, and i'm sorry to say that my weekend was likely better than yours. Haha! Movie are the best! #Filmsky #MovieSky #Letterboxd
It’s incredibly impressive that this is Jordan Firstman’s feature directorial debut, especially while also giving such a great performance. Club Kid could’ve just been a funny nightlife comedy, but it becomes something much more human. One of my favorite NYC films of the year. 3/3
NYC is absolutely a character here. I worked in nightlife in NYC for a decade, so I really appreciated how authentic the clubs, promoters, guest lists, late nights and chaos all feel. And the gorgeous 35mm cinematography gives the city exactly the texture it needs. 2/3
Club Kid is a great coming-of-age story about someone who probably should’ve grown up a long time ago. It’s hilarious, messy and surprisingly moving, with Jordan Firstman giving the film much more emotional depth than I expected. 1/3

Valeska Grisebach’s THE DREAMED ADVENTURE, writes @jakecole.bsky.social, makes resonant meaning from a patchwork of longueurs and digressions with no interest in bringing forth a concrete resolution. The film has its U.S. premiere tonight at #NYFF64. shorturl.at/HMUX7
With #OneMoreTime, André Gregory shares a moving curtain call, a personal document that looks back at the work of three accomplished thespians and reckons in the present with their shared mortality.
