A5 #LTHEchat apart from those who physically struggle with being able to see things there is an element of personal preference: I have enough experience of using maps to navigate with other people to know that many don't share my own enthusiasm for them. Maybe we need to work on visual literacy 1/2

Good point. I studied a masters in mining engineering and I struggle a lot in Geomechanic class. But the lecturer made it more 'fun' as he drew excavations and stress in rocks using even llamas, dinosaurs. The laughter made me relax, focus and understand more #LTHEchat

#LTHEchat A4 We start some topics by asking participants to find a song that represents the topic - in others it might be an image or a poem - in others we get them using found words to make poetry summaries of their learning - still others they find an object that does that...

A3 Engagement above the surface, but below - undiagnosed SpLDs (special learning differences), poor mental health and a lack of learning activities. The spatial positioning emphasises the visible and invisible teaching challenges. #LTHEChat

Q5 - Whose needs might be overlooked when we rely heavily on visuals? How could you design for inclusive learning from the start?

A4. In one module, we used two root cause analysis tools: a fishbone and 5 whys. The idea is that students reflect and analyse the problems and causes. Some struggle more than others, now more with AI. I try to teach them to be more critical when using AI (they should become the marker) #LTHEChat

We have been fighting the same fight! We also use use blind drawing, collage and making activities to release the need to be perfect - and then to explore through visual methods - but also to explore through free writing too #LTHEchat

A4 #LTHEchat depends on the setting but in tutorial discussions with students it's often good to pick up on concepts that they raise & map them out on a flipchart

It’s works so well. Maybe you struggle to prompt what you want. Or maybe you are not a confident drawer, but can do enough to get a message across. I’ve really enjoyed this human + AI approach in prototyping. I cover it a lot within design thinking. #LTHEchat

@suebecks.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:37 PM

Ooh not tried that! #LTHEchat

@danceswithcloud.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:36 PM

one of my 1st years in a research project found our students too unconfident to draw even in their OWN notes! So we got them 'blind drawing' and making collages first so that they could relinquish the idea that drawings had to be perfect... #LTHEchat

A4: I feel like I’ve spent a decade campaigning for better visual literacy alongside @jaxbartram.bsky.social. I hate how much prominence there is to academic, information, digital - and now AI literacy. Visual literacy is a core part of this all #LTHEchat

@martinrich106.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:35 PM

A4 #LTHEchat I use visual methods quite sparingly & they usually go down well when I do. Not just diagrams but a well-chosen photo can be good in cementing an idea in students' minds. For instance I'll be using a photo of a Time Out food market to illustrate how businesses can shift between sectors

@tavoer8.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:35 PM

No worries, I used in my post an example of one of my students. It is an example 😀 #LTHEChat

#LTHEchat A4 With whiteboard - making & illustrating key word pattern notes. Without whiteboard - key words on slides with visuals to illustrate, illuminate or challenge the ideas...

A3 This is one fishbone and 5 whys of a former student. They had to analyse the root cause of two sustainability issues. Sometimes we are not too abstract, so we need to draw or write our thoughts and make connections. It is more visually appealing (the assessment was a poster) #LTHEChat

@tavoer8.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:31 PM

It was more interesting when there were two lines in parallel (based on two types of assessment and when they intersect with def/ref assessment deadlines too #LTHEchat

S@scottturneruon.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:30 PM

A2 #lthechat I think for me it is in part it is okay to draw. As an aside I draw my notes in meetings- I take more in that way. Weirdly shading in help me concentrate more

@lthechat.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:30 PM

Q4 - Do you use visual methods in your teaching and how are they received? What approaches would you like to use?
