Online meetings scheduled for half past the hour are designed to cause a coronary event. End post.

Thanks everyone for sharing ideas, practices and being so open to thinking visually. I'll gather some of the links posted here in the blog post. See you next week.

Amazing! A colleague was plotting a horror short to illustrate a key learning around academic integrity. More of this please.

I used body mapping - groups decide what the head/brain represents, the eyes etc then they answer a pertinent question. I've used this to explore how staff development is organised in multiple institutions. I've also drawn an educational river (credit to Kenneth Burns for original idea)

Great to capture the messy thinking rather than just the polished product. The joy is the mess!

A great spring board. I often default to powerpoint for drawing rather than Canva or other tools.

I had students midway in an engaged research project draw what they felt the project was about. It really help clarify where we thought we were, where we werent yet and respond to concerns, ideas etc.

Such a great resource, thank you. I'll add it to the blog post. Staff similarly can feel shy about using visuals in teaching. Its a skill that needs attention and development.

Pacing is so important and chance to uncover layers appropriately

Visual literacy, as with media literacy, vitally important in a media soaked world - have a look at: blogs.brighton.ac.uk/visuallearni... - @paulineridley.bsky.social has been lobbying for visual practices in education for some while!! #LTHEchat

I discovered recently that some people dont form mental images internally, for example apple, and process the concept differently by internal speech or other means.

I love the variety of outputs.

A4 I often use visual metaphor to explore topics, use photovoice cards etc. I try to model sketch noting to encourage focus in sessions where attention may be waning.

I havent used the fishbone but great to see this example. All useful in exploring systems thinking.

@catherineomahony.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:35 PM

Great example, thank you. Visuals to make connections more concrete and help students trace these links.

@catherineomahony.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:32 PM

Agreed. So much is hidden or so engrained in terms of forming disciplinary insights that it can be hard to uncover.

@catherineomahony.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:31 PM

Interesting. Example of human first approach to AI also.

A3 Admittedly I did make this earlier. Reflecting on concerns around lecture attendance (though its not a proxy for engagement).

Iceberg model starts with event: poor attendance at lectures. Next layer down is pattern: post covid drop in campus based lectures. Next layer down is structures: cost of living, housing pressures, expectations re T&L, last layer is mental modes: assumption students are full-time

That is so cool! Slightly alarming red line running through but super effective for clarity.

@catherineomahony.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:21 PM

How do you make them? Sketch yourself, powerpoint?
