You wonder what they found as they dug out this pond for the 18th century manor house... In the middle of an Iron Age hillfort!

#HillfortsWednesday

Excavations in the centre today find that the Iron Age material has been mostly cleared away 😀

Tatchbury Mount is an oval 2 hectare contour #hillfort at the edge of Southampton #Hampshire and the New Forest

Today the once mighty Iron Age earthworks sleep quietly under trees and are largely forgotten. A public footpath crosses the SW ramparts

The northern ramparts and ditches of Meikle Reive Fort on the southern slopes of the Campsie Fells, near Glasgow. An early Iron Age date has been suggested, with possible later occupation in the early medieval period. πŸ“Έ My own. #HillfortsWednesday #CampsieFells

Definitely not a British hillfort. Yamchun Fortress, overlooking the mountains of Afghanistan in the Wakhan Valley, Tajikistan. Still Iron Age! Originally built in 300 BCE to guard the ancient Silk Road, expanded in the 10th Century.
