My next standalone project is historical fiction with a local folklore twist. It's part queer romance, part history, part supernatural set in the roaring 20s in the middle of an oil boomtown reinventing itself. The folklore: El Diablo en el Baile - The Devil at the Dance.

Aurelia Cavazos is a modern woman in an old fashioned town – mouthy and bold at 19 never caught a man in Laredo, Texas, and the changing times of the roaring 20s didn't fix that.  But she, like every eligible young person, went to the Bailes every weekend to be seen and, maybe, be courted – and after almost a year of it she found she didn't care to be, much to every Doña's delighted dismay. Andrew Fielding changed that.  Svelte, tall, and well-groomed, he brought his Chicago money and his twin sister Andrea to the edge of the U.S. looking for the next big thing, and oil had been king in Webb County for six years.  His singular fixation on Aurelia raised the eyebrows and excited the pocketbooks of families with stock to invest in – be it business or daughters. But there's an old tale in those parts about el diablo en el baile – the devil at the dance – and how a stranger fixated on wild young women may not be at all what he seems.  Devils are real in South Texas, and after several weeks, no one knows what the Fieldings actually want.  To Aurelia, Andrew is everything the other boys can never be, and the closer Aurelia grows to Andrea, the more she longs to spend time with her. Would that be so wrong?
