Loyalist chauvinism did not start last Sunday or in Drumcree in 1995 or with the Troubles in 1969 or in 1920 with partition and the establishment of a sectarian Northern state. It is centuries old. The first Orange parade in Drumcree took place in July 1795, instigated by a Protestant minister whose sermon “so worked up the minds of his audience [they] gave full scope to their anti-papistical zeal” on their way home from church. Thus recorded historian Francis Plowden.
