Nine Canada Goose
A'honkin' go
Flying Southwards.
Pitch black dark:
Tawny Owl shrieks;
Little Owl whoops;
Barn Owl glides;
And morning starts.
Gravity-defying leaf
twirled upwards
by an air current,
roundly ignored
by a jouncing,
rapidly chattering
Pied Wagtail o'erhead.
High Wycombe might've been murder on my bloody knee(s), but it has proved rich in Nature and for that I'll forever be grateful. The Chilterns National Landscape is beautiful.
High Wycombe birding firsts:
Little Egret, Coot
Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Peregrine Falcon
Common Redstart, Reed Bunting
Barn Owl, Little Owl, Tawny Owl
High Wycombe non-bird firsts:
Bat
Moths (by the half dozen!)
High Wycombe firsts:
A Rock Dove landing on my arm
4.30am:
A Barn Owl, ghostly white and uttering a ghastly cry in the pitch-black dark, is answered minutes later by the sweet trill of a Robin.
(Not sure why I saved this to my Drafts instead of posting it - possibly wasn't fully awake!)
Against the grey, overcast sky
Two Red Kite circle endlessly,
From a tree a Jay calls raucously,
While a pair of Crows comment noisily,
And a Magpie rattles insistently.
6am and out
in the cool, damp dark
a Robin starts its ticking,
then a second joins in.
Moments later, a third
sends forth a burst
of bright song. And just like that,
the dawn chorus has begun.
Nine Red Kites
circling, soaring,
floating, swooping,
twisting, diving:
Brownian Motion
in bird form.
A cold blue sky,
with pink sunrise clouds,
and the lonely call
of a Buzzard passes o'erhead.
Out of the cold dark
An Owl barks:
A Tawny is on the hunt.
Five Red Kite soar and circle,
then twist and fall,
swooping down,
before soaring up again.
And from the treetops,
two Carrion Crow call.
The Corvids are up in arms/wings:
two Carrion Crow are shouting vehemently,
while a Jay screeches emphatically,
and a pair of Magpie rattle ominously.
The cause?
A Red Kite is soaring high above them all.
Nature Observations September 9th.
The first hazelnut of the season lying on the concrete pavement;
A Red Kite hunched like a feathery gargoyle atop a pole;
A fast Brown Rat scuttling through the back garden;
The bite of Autumn in the air that lasts all day.
Out of the darkness comes a call,
Startling in the silence is Tawny Owl.
Relentless rain radically refreshes and revitalises.
(Aka the grass in the back garden is properly green again!)
Not looking forward
To this day;
Stomach in knots.
But as I left for work,
There were bats in the sky
And a crescent moon.
And now magpies scatter
Unspoken assurance
Of winds that will bear
Mischievous wings.
And a maple seed
Lying on my office floor.
Ghastly shriek,
Ghostly figure,
Barn Owl
Is hunting.
Clouds painted in white brushstrokes across a blazing blue sky.
Sunrise after rain.
Sunrise reflected.
