#MinCup26 Quarterfinal 1
It’s a rich red start to the quarterfinals as two components of brass face off with zinc ore #Sphalerite is up against copper-rich #Cuprite.

Split photo of a glossy ruby-red chunk of sphalerite, slightly rounded, amongst smaller clear crystals and a gleaming ruby-red cube of cuprite jutting from a yellow matrix.

hehehe they said "perfect cleavage" hejehehe #cuprite

I really like index minerals and unfancy minerals like #andalucite that help scientists learn other things, but on the other hand, #cuprite and I both have imperfect #cleavage, so I can relate.
*sigh*
I think I will probably go with the andalusite this time.
I hate hard choices.

Let's go #cuprite!

Look at that edges, that shape, it's totally clear you all have to vote #Cuprite!

We’re joining this coppery, Neo Assyriany bull (that earring!) and charging ahead with a vote for #cuprite in today’s #MinCup26 matchup.

Gotta go with Cuprite. No particular reason other than it’s darn pretty and I like it 🤷🏻‍♀️

#MinCup26 A blood red copper mineral that looks like #TTRPG dice? Yes, please. Go #Cuprite!

#MinCup26 Round 2 Match 3:
It's a shiny showdown as soft copper-rich #Cuprite is up against the multicoloured index mineral #Andalusite.

Split image of a pair of candy-looking translucent minerals. On one side is the geometric pointed tip of cherry-red cuprite, on the other is a rough bar of peachy andalusite embedded in a white grainy matrix.

Congratulations to #Cuprite for defeating #Orpiment by a 13% margin over 1127 votes in #MinCup26 R1M5

Orpiment was slowly closing the gap near the end, but just not quickly enough. Better luck next time!

#Cuprite❣️

@catwithgeologists.bsky.socialSep 5, 2026, 5:27 PM

Today, it’s #cuprite versus #orpiment in the #MinCup26. Easy! The #mineral orpiment contains arsenic, & that is very toxic to #cats. But cuprite is a #copper oxide that often forms on #bronze statues, & bronze statues exist primarily to pay homage to cats.
