Jake sat nervously yet comfortably in his chair. Daniel Goldman’s office was clean and appropriately appointed, with the necessities of a law office. Certificates and family pictures adorned the panelwalls, while a nearly dead fern stood in the corner.
As Daniel walked quickly into the office, he closed the door behind him.
“Mr Jacob Riley, I presume?” He said, extending his hand.
“Yes, sir, I am, but you can call me Jake, everyone else does.”

Two Imperatives

The ath'kura ran and darkness fell and pain blossomed until at last it
wilted like a season that passed and all that was left was the thread, the
thread that connected them. *I am coming.*

And Shalhra broke stride, changed direction. It was something he
never did without warning, and in his weakness Drisal lost his seat and
crashed to the ground. He gasped for his wind while Shalhra circled and
whinnied. Then the stallion came to a stop and stiffened, ears pricked.

"What?" Drisal croaked. A premonition came, and then a shock. Shalhra pivoted toward him snorting, half-reared, pawed. Lowered his nose to the ground. Drisal clawed toward him, but the effort was too great. He could not get so far as his knees. Shahra spun. Drisal felt it without
understanding, some sort of CALL. It was too much for the ath'kura. It pulled
him from beyond time. He twisted his long silver body and galloped into
the haunted night, and left Drisal alone.

The basilica had all the spikes and arches meant to evoke the majesty of God. The stone structure didn't bring up any memories of the catechistic education of my youth, though. The only person who might understand my frustration, I thought, was Mr. Andersen, or Alexander, as he had invited me to call him. While I valued the time I spent with the workers, I could not talk about art or ideas without further alienating myself from them. They would have looked at me with blank expressions, unable to understand what troubled me. Some would resent me for flaunting my education and assume that I viewed myself as superior to them, which I certainly did not. Alexander was not an artist and had not much understanding of the principles of composition or artistic appreciation. But he at least saw art as something of value and understood the desire to create something that did not previously exist. He aspired to create an “empire” that would bear his name. I think he hoped that his family in Norway would hear of his success and approve. It was not so different from wanting to create photographs that people would admire and compare with the works of Constable and Homer.
Talking with Alexander about culture and the promise of the new century was pleasant and nourishing. I do not think I was under any illusion about our relationship. I never forgot the fact that, although I was older than him, I was his underling. I served a valuable function in his organization, translating for Olsen, the foreman, and selling Cracker Jack in his store.

*Deidra gets an unpleasant surprise

So, for the second time since starting the job, she called in sick.
“Hi Sally,” she said when she heard the women pick up. Her voice dropped in tone, guilty as charged. “I’m still kinda shaky today, Sals. I don’t think I can come in.”
“Deidra? What are you doing? I’ve got better things to do. You’ve got some nerve calling here today after what happened yesterday.”
Deidra was confused, she said so with her silence.
“Don’t call here anymore, you got it. I thought we were frie…”
“Wait. Sally. What…what happened yesterday?” Something in her stomach dropped – a lead ball of doom.
“What? What d’ya mean what happened yesterday? You quit! And not in a professional manner. That’s what happened yesterday.”
The call dropped. Sally had hung up.
Deidra had sat in the car, immobile. Her life was spiraling in a Kamikaze death roll and the ground was coming up fast. She didn’t call anybody yesterday – she slept yesterday. After a few moments she called the doctor.
