They're not limited to one region but what they produce varies by region. For example, the staple crop varies by region, depending on whether the plant in question can tolerate frost and water requirements. It's a very large area so it's impossible to generalize.

Most things are grown in hydrofarms. With the exceptions of the orchards in Dorrain and the broken down farms on the outskirts of Rainier.

Hydrofarms are pretty much what they sound like. It was the best way to navigate polluted water and soil. It allowed the cities...

Caax is well known for it's farmland and it grows... just about everything. Mostly grains, there are also orchards and dairy farms and it's def the agriculture hub of Itzam! Holom has some great onions in the south west regions.

Map of Itzam:
Wiil to the west, Zipan at the north. Caax is in the middle with Holom as an attached country to the northwest. Tohil is in the south (Unlabeled and incomplete) and Nich to the north east with a large landbridge to Kabra in the south east.

#SeptemberWorldbuilders, this isn't a specific question, but more of an invitation to talk about a topic: farms, orchards, ranches, places where food is gathered/grown/made. Tell me a little about it. Any specific practices they do or things they produce?

Oops, I think I answered this in my winter post

But if I get to talk about Soft Ice again, making it's just like making taffy, which is basically what it is. The fun part is all the flavorings, which usually start with a fruit base and are

There's a season of magical-radioactivity in a Sunless Land called Mistide, which is deadly to sentient races. Mages enjoy Mistwine, made from fruit that only pollinates that season; say it tastes of anticipation spiced w/ patience

In Othera elves actually are all vegetarian, as they are unable to process meat.

This means that their culture had extremely advanced agriculture, and recipes many of which are lost a time.

The primary elf character in Othos unbound is Belladonna who’s not a great cook.

I’ve talked about them before, but the most commonly made dessert across both continents are honey cakes.

Honey cakes are made four times a year for the festival Cassanam.

There is variety, but they are a flaky pastry with filling on the inside, drizzled with honey 🧵

HOLAA starts in spring just as glimmerfish run & mountain passes thaw

Seasons are hugely important in a Sunless Land- 5th is deadly for the unprepared. Creates both a ticking clock for the plot + an opp for cozy character scenes as MCs wait for it's end

As I mentioned before every four years, there is what is called a blue winter.

This is when the planet enters orbit of the large blue Star Oth.

This turns the nighttime royal blue, and ignite the sky in Aurora borealis.

And also amplifies all magic. 🧵

Everett has always been particularly fond of the beginning of fall when leaves are beginning to turn and the summer heat is beginning to fade.

It was always when he and his brother would go fishing during their Father’s long hunting trips.

So real talk: food is not something I generally tend to focus on much in my stories. I've invented a few fantasy fruits and vegetables, but whenever I write a scene about characters having a proper meal I generally just tend to use IRL dishes that seem to fit the setting.

Grenwyrms. It's a confection whose flavour profile is similar to particularly rich chocolate with notes of mint, which I have not ever characterised the process behind making that I can recall.

It is a potent, unisex 🧵

Day 12. Any unique/ invented foods in your world?

I have many. Monsters eat differently than humans. There's spell-o-meat and Frosted Mochalite among many others.

There are quite a few unique foods & dishes for Nixtral. Belomian wavefruit, for example, looks similar to a dragonfruit but tastes like a banana.

I've even crafted dishes for my stories, some of which I've actually prepared IRL, and they're delicious!

Nothing unique unique. We did fuse a lot of IRL recipes into unique combinations for The Diner in the story, and there's Orcish Chili which is spicy but not burning hot ridiculous.

Green Hunter's Stew

a simple broth with foraged plants, mushrooms, and berries; tastes extra good with a pinch of salt

Domesticated pheasant meat. It tastes like wild pheasants but less gamey.

I know potions are common in magic settings, but I like to think mine are vaugley unique.

All botanists and alchemists keep yeast on them because my potions are magical alcohol. The stronger the volume, the more powerful the potion.

All reagents are fictional plants.
