Just learning Canvas, and have had a nasty lesson in how easy it is to created duplicate assignments- with the same names--without realizing it. Now grading four different groups of students in two classes of 25.

Love it or hate it, Chat said:

Canvas’s nasty little trick is that adding an existing assignment to a module and creating a new assignment from within a module can look perilously similar. The module is just a navigation structure; the actual assignment lives under Assignments. If you inadvertently created four versions in each section, student submissions are now scattered among them. Before grading anything: Open Assignments in each section and identify every duplicate. Check which versions actually contain submissions—do not delete or unpublish those. Rename them temporarily so the queues are unmistakable, such as: Assignment 2 — Group A submissions Assignment 2 — Group B submissions Remove duplicate module links only when they point to the wrong versions. Removing an item from a module does not necessarily delete the underlying assignment. For the future, when adding to a module, click +, choose Assignment, and then select the existing assignment from the list—do not choose New Assignment. Unfortunately, Canvas won’t merge submitted work from duplicate assignments into one SpeedGrader queue. But after this round, you can preserve the assignment that received submissions, attach your cleaned rubric to every live duplicate if necessary, and eliminate the extras before the next deadline.Canvas could perform a simple check whenever someone clicks New Assignment: Normalize the proposed title Search existing assignments in the course If an identical or very similar title exists: “An assignment named ‘Résumé Assignment’ already exists. Use existing assignment | Create duplicate anyway” The comparison itself might take 20–50 lines of code. A production-quality feature—with the warning dialog, accessibility, permissions, tests, translations, analytics, and protection against false alarms—might be a few hundred lines across the system. For a company maintaining Canvas, that is a small feature, not a major engineering undertaking. A slightly smarter version could also compare: Assignment title Instructions Point value Due date Attached rubric Source/import identifier No generative AI is necessary. A fuzzy-text comparison would catch things like “Website Assignment” versus “Website Assignment-2.” AI could produce a more conversational warning, but the essential intelligence is simply: You have an existing assignment with the same name and content. Did you mean to add that assignment to this module? Indeed, imported assignments should carry unique IDs, so Canvas may already possess stronger evidence than title similarity: it could know that the thing you’re recreating closely matches an imported object already in that course. The difficult part isn’t the code. It’s that nobody made preventing accidental duplication a product requirement. That is a classic interface-design failure: Canvas permitted a predictable, costly error and gave you neither a warning nor an easy merge function afterward. Fifty students are now paying in confusion, and you’re paying in fragmented grading queues, because the software saved itself one confirmation box.
