Is it mantis? Is the new, Is it cake #BugSky

Orange hawkweed, Pilosella aurantica. A very attractive invasive species. They spread heavily both through seed and stolons, and can form monocultures. They do provide food for generalist polinators, like the small halictid bee visiting in the pictures. But native hawkweeds provide more.

I am not certain but I think this is a Trogus vulpinus zipping around a crabapple. I’m sure I will be spending the rest of the week searching for canadian swallowtail caterpillars to poach. #bugsky

Macro of a moth hanging upside down beneath an unopened wildflower bud. Viewed from a head-on perspective, the insect displays large, glistening golden compound eyes and long antennae extending downward and slightly out to its stage-left and stage-right. Its slender, pale legs firmly clasp the green sepals of the bud, while its vibrant, deep crimson wings spread horizontally outward. To its stage-right, a smaller green bud is covered in glittering dew droplets. The background is a soft, solid green bokeh blur.

Hey #bugsky

Just listened to @arthro-pod.bsky.social 's two part special on the rise and fall of DDT. Would SUPER recommend it, especially if you want to understand how modern USamerican attitudes towards bugs were formed.

Also I just realized I tagged the post below for the birds feed which is very silly. Sorry about that!

Acorn weevil for #SciArtSeptember 14, "crescent". I actually did start this on the 14th so I'm too impatient to wait another day for #WeevilWednesday. 😛

Mixed media experiment (watercolor pastel, colored pencil, & gouache) on paper, ~13x14cm.
