im more a middle person but endings are like good too, because you can see how the characters truly developed by the time the story is over

I struggle with this, honestly. I love a cold open, but I go back and forth between an immediate action hook to something more subdued.
I guess it comes down to what shakes the character most. Something emotional, to make them pivot.
That’s how I choose.
hi. i am author. the baddest bitch on the block. still working on Chaos and hoping to finish chapter ten before tuesday
#tbbchat meeting new characters 😍🥰 I love falling in love with my characters and their issues.
One of my favorite things is creating my playlists. I have a playlist for every character in my current WIP. When I get a new idea and a new character, one of the first things I do is find them a few theme songs, then I start building their personality.
I sometimes find the beginning a hard place to start.
Endings offer an opportunity to close the story before it even begins, so I’d say endings.
When I know where the story ends, writing the start is easier.
I’ve had the ending of my series planned long before I wrote the first book.

Figuring out a new set of themes to bundle the characters and surroundings and story into! It's SO satisfying to see all the bits coalesce together until it feels like this story HAD to involve these characters in this place! Sometimes the theme is unconscious, too, and I realize it later.

Learning and bonding with the characters! I Love getting to know my new headspace mates.
Man was i surprised when a super tall weeping masked man showed up and brought 3 masked friends.

I've joked before that Tolkien only wrote his books to show off his hot elves and elven poetry, and I do it so I have a place to put all my jokes.
The best bit really is coming up with a lot of jokes and amusing situations for my characters, and figuring out...
Tie between NEW FRIENDS and NEW WORLD TO BUILD.
I love characters coming to life on the page, become more than a plan of a person and developing idiosyncracies.
I love love love making up little details about the world that make it instantly unique.
Realigning my metaphors/visuals to fit the story. Whether that's what makes sense to the character specifically (like stars for Kosma in Of All the Stars) or the story (all the mythology refs in The Wine-Dark Sea), it really sets the stage for the whole thing. #TBBChat
TBB Chat Q3: What's one of your favorite things about starting a new story or series?
#TBBChat My reason with the longer narratives is because I understand that longer books (like 500 pages) can be seen as a commitment, and if the reader doesn't care about the characters when I start with action right away, there's a risk they may not want to follow them or care about the plot.
