TEXT:

"Have you decided how you will address the Nayeztlians about our proposition?"
"*Your* proposition. And I have not," he answered, eyes fixed on the woods in the distance.
Though the youth's mind seemed to be elsewhere, Dalian thought him to certainly look the part—the blood-red cape draping between his squared shoulders, the tightened jaw and pensive brow, his long, flower-adorned curls trembling and shifting shapes with the slightest of movements. Indira's beautiful face replicated, her features more angular and somehow less pronounced in their child. But there was so much he had yet to learn, and so much that still kept him away. And Dalian worried. "Gnnaedir, your subjects need your reassurance. They need to feel that you will know how to guide them should a time come when they are most in need of it."
"If guiding them means accelerating their genocide, then I will not be the one to do to it."
"You would contribute to no such thing. We only seek their compliance, a right to inhabit these lands alongside them."
"Compliance can hardly be called voluntary under the threat of knife and famine."
"You do not understand what is at stake here. And the Panopli will not listen to me..."
"But you're certain that they'll listen to one of their own," Gnnaedir finished for him, finally turning to give his father a sharp, combative glare. "Is that why you sought me out? To be your scapegoat? Your pawn?"
"To be my *heir*." Dalian's voice grew stern. "As my firstborn, as Crown Prince, you have an obligation to uphold and a promise to fulfill. A prophecy to disprove. I have made many mistakes in my life, mistakes for which I will eternally repent, but on occasion, there rises an opportunity to correct these errors and bridge these differences."

"So, you wish to amend the faults of the Crown by burdening me with them," Gnnaedir confronted.
"This is the price of power. And reaching a diplomatic compromise would be far better for all of us than to have to plunge into battle. But if the Panopli refuse to accept our ways and integrate, then escalating with talks of war may be the necessary, single course of action left to prevent further senseless violence."
"The Crown has threatened violence before, and it has followed through. You say that it would be a last recourse, yet your blacksmiths forge weapons by the dozens. What of the wars that were fought before my time? What did all those altercations prevent?”
"These are merely precautions we must take. It's true that my father was a difficult man and prone to cruelty, but the skirmishes and scuffles that were fought under his orders can hardly be considered *wars*.”
"Tell that to the ruins of my people's villages and the corpses whose spilled blood still dampens the soil."
Dalian grew somber. After a contemplative pause, he tried, "It pains me to know that no reassurances I could offer you can change what transpired under my predecessor's rule. But a consolation you might find in our present day is that you have the power to change all of our people's futures. This is the role that you were born into."

"You're mistaken," Gnnaedir countered with a wry, humorless scoff. "I took my first breaths amidst the rubble of the fires
your Crown began, there in the muck and wreckage that the soldiers under its command left behind. I grew to learn the face of Lady Death, begged her for the mercy that your God never granted me. *That* was the role that you decided the child you claim to love should have." At the King's lowering, remorseful eyes, Gnnaedir continued. "And now that you've found use for me, you wish for me to pretend that I had a hand in any of it, or that I alone can change the course of my people's fate. But I will not answer for something I never partook in. I want no part in your one-sided solutions."
Dalian was quiet at this, only breathing out a tender, worn sigh as one of his hands flew up to rub his temple. They stood in tense silence until he spoke again with a shake of his head, the streaks of silver in his dark hair shifting out of place. "I am not proud of much of the history I share with my father," he conceded, his voice ever-so-gentle. "He held so much power in my life, and so many of his choices were ones I would do anything to reverse. The task of undoing his mistakes is the cross I must bear because of the title I inherited. But it is a history that joins my life to his, and one that inextricably binds *our* lives together, as well. And, with time, I hope you can come to see how much we do have in common," he tried, extending his hand with paternal benignity to rest on the other's shoulder.
But Gnnaedir only stepped back with a staggered jolt, eyes darkened and wild. "I am *nothing* like you."
