For day 21 of #FFXIVWrite, Better Late Than Never

Haurchefant figures it out.

(Again, Mature but not exactly explicit.)

Haurchefant sits back on his heels. A strange expression is on his face,

He crosses his arms.

And then, gently, he asks, "Would my beloved husband like to tell me where he's been for the last several months? I've missed you."

Koray sucks in a breath.

day 21 - better late than never

amaris’ thoughts and feelings as she seeks asylum at the church of saint adama landama post waking sands massacre

[ #📝 | #ffxivwrite2026 | #ffxivwrite ]

Amaris feels her bones chill as the desert sun sets, a sliver of the remaining sun cutting at her cheek. She tries to ignore it as she makes her slow ascent towards the Church of Saint Adama Landama with her chocobo's reins in hand. It has been a long few days, and if her intuition is right, the days will only grow longer.

The simple roofs of the church come into view before the many, many gravestones do. The back of Amaris' mind tinges with a reminder of the bodies that very well could still be laying on the floors of the Waking Sands.

Her teeth grit. It's not my fault, she thinks to herself. It is a platitude but she is willing to try anything to not turn heel again and continue on the path she has chosen.

I'm doing the right thing, she adds in the back of her mind. It doesn't matter that it took her time to decide to do it. She's doing it now and that has to be enough.

When she makes it to the church's doors, she stables Icarus with a heavy blanket overtop his back and walks inside. The pews are quiet, and for a moment, she is alone.Being alone means that she is in poor company. One that is quick to teeter towards fear. One that is still unsteady despite her resolve.

She is grateful for the sound of a door opening causing her to near jump from her skin. She recognizes the source of the sound as the priest of the church, Father Iliud. In reply to her wide eyed stare, he greets her warmly. "Welcome to the Church of Saint Adama Landama." He says.

Amaris walks up to him slowly, forgetting anything and everything she could say.

"Is something troubling you, my child?" He probes. "You have the look of one who has endured great suffering. If there is anything I can do to help — anything at all — you need only ask."

His words hit her like an well aimed arrow and her words flow from her before she can consider them.

"The wild roses are dead, Father, and...and I don't know what to do." She admits as her gaze falls to the floor.

No amount of her genuine determination or forced encouraging words can hide that truth. Amaris does not know how to keep moving forward but she will endeavor to try - to make up for lost time and do the right thing for those who now must rely on her and her alone.

(7.0) Being a postmoogle is exhausting.

ellipsus.com/read/4StzaYc...

The life of a postmoogle was perilous indeed. Especially for a rookie like Mogreg.

One of Sharlayan's gleaners found Mogreg trapped in the jaws of an aspis in Shaaloani. Their intervention of a sharp tug on the serpent's tail sent him flying onto the nearby train tracks. The rails rumbled and the ballast vibrated. Mogreg lifted his fuzzy head and saw a train barrelling towards him. He had no time to get up, settling instead on squeezing himself against the track and hoping there was enough clearance to spare him.

It was a risky gamble, but it paid off. His paws gripped the sleeper beneath him as metal mechanisms rushed over him and he prayed to every god he knew. Good King Moggle Mog XIII first, because of course, and then the Twelve, and the kami as a nebulous concept (he didn't really know how to worship them, but he was desperate to try). With one last whoosh of air, the train's entire length had passed over Mogreg, leaving him panting frantically on the track.

Writing Excerpt:
The sound of metal meeting earth was hardly audible as Byakaruso settled the lance into a cushion of lush grass. He himself shifted his weight low onto his haunches, forearms relaxed across his thighs. Solemnly he surveyed the vast landscape stretched out before him, up to the mountains with rainbow waters at their base, to the very distant plains visible beyond them leading into more rocky borders. Should he bother to look enough, he could make out the yurts, the levitating throne, the One River, the singing stones. But his gaze was drawn up to the sapphire sky.

21. Better Late Than Never

She unslung her pack from her shoulder as she approached the makeshift altar, carefully rummaging around for her own offering to add to the half-burned candles and leather pouches of tobacco. "Pawmepya said I was supposed to bring a fish oil candle, but I thought this suited you better," she murmured as she placed the massive dried sunflower head onto the stone slab. "You never did like the way those things smelled, anyway."

Iyaate's ears wavered as she sat back on her heels, her gaze dropping to her balled-up fists as she tried to gather her thoughts. She'd had the entirety of the long hike from Sheshenewezi Springs to think of what to say, and now she was at a loss for words?

21. Better Late Than Never

Peridot finally revisits some of her past, neglected for well over a decade.

Story Snippet:

Light now being shed from the brazier, she turns and begins to look over her surroundings. Various rocks with inscriptions line the outside of the cave, making a ring of sorts along the walls. The rocks, epitaphs. The cave, a tomb. The brazier placed in the center a traditional fixture of Miqo'te burial sites. This is the cave she was searching for.

Many other Miqo'te tribes have similar practices. Dead arranged in a ring or along the walls, and ornamental braziers maintained for light and a ritualism all their own. Results of their shared ancestry, one would imagine. She has even seen similar in the rites in Tural, though they practiced open-air scaffold burials.

But this brazier has not been maintained in years. And as she reflects on this, she comes to an understanding. Would maintaining it have been anyone's job, it would have likely been her own. A duty to the dead she has neglected for well over a decade now. "Better late than never" she muses to herself.

Day 21- Better Late Than Never

This theme was perfectly timed because I had been writing this in my head before bed last night.

#FFXIVwrite #FFXIVwrite2026

G'raha was about to stand and offer to take his turn making a pot of tea when Tataru came in the door. She looked quite upset as she hurried over.

"Please come upstairs with me for a moment," she whispered. "I have a problem and I don't know where anyone else is!"

G'raha did not hesitate to jump up. He heard the creak of a chair behind him, the only indication he had that Thancred followed. The Hyuran man still had an unnerving ability to step quietly even with the heavier armor he now favored.

In the hall with the door shut, Tataru did that nervous hop that Lalafell made when upset before explaining.

"There's someone upstairs who insists on seeing Tora, but ooooh I… I don't feel comfortable! But I don't know how to tell her no."

G'raha looked at Thancred, who returned his gaze with a resolved look.

"Who is this would-be visitor?" G'raha asked. "Why is it they make you so uncomfortable?"

"It's… do you remember Gota'a Panipahr?"
