#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 11: Free Friday

I want to talk a little bit about fight scenes. They're epidemic in fantasy. My short advice is always have a second goal. A fight should never just be to win. There should be mechanics the audience understands developing during the fight.

Day 11.

Currently down with a cold, or perhaps the dreaded man-flu 🤒

Thanks to that I've been struggling to be creative with writing and art. It's frustrating 😖

A book that reminds me of autumn?

'The Haunting of Aveline Jones' by Phil Hickes.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 11 Free Friday #Dreams

I had the most trippy dream last night that was like a kid's story:

A young boy spends the night at a museum where every 100 years, all the artifacts turn human for a night. From taxidermied animals, to Baroque vases, to ancient whips or lashes.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 11. Books that remind you of autumn?

Right away I thought of the Hexes Go Well With Tequilla (Lost Souls series). I enjoyed the series but I will say that unfortunately the formatting and editing got progressively worse as the series went on

#fantasyindiesseptember Day 11

Some of my favorite autumn books include:

The Ex Hex, Leslie Meier's cozy mysteries, because she's written so many Halloween and Thanksgiving books and I love doing a reread every few years, Of Myth and Memento Mori by Victoria Clapton (spooky in Appalachia!)

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 11:

Okay, I missed 9 days of this. Sometimes it’s good to stay away from social media to recharge the batteries.

My original book cover for “Shadows Under the Shade” reminds me of autumn, or more specifically, Halloween.

Free Friday, I'm just gonna say I'm in edit trenches right now. Haven't had time to read, and my brain is too mush to think about what books remind me of right now lol.

I'll have my brain back in a week!

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 11 book that reminds me of autumn.

I'd like to mention I think the criminally under appreciated The Bookshop and the Barbarian by Morgan Stang. It has a lovely harvest festival scene. And I love fall more than any other season.

Fantasy Indies September day 11 - book that reminds you of autumn

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 11

In autumn, I feel drawn to cozy mysteries--Agatha Christie and the like--and spy novels. Not necessarily thrillers so much as old-school, John le Carré-style stuff. Also, anything set in a small town is good.

Day 11

Happy Friday! Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree always feels like an autumn read even though there is no specific season stated. How to Survive Camping: The Man With No Shadow by Bonnie Quinn is another good one.

Free Friday

Unfortunately, I haven't had a lick of time to do any writing this week due to other obligations. Which will probably continue to be the case for at least another week. 😭

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 11: Books that remind me of autumn

No book reminds me of autumn more than one I wrote in autumn, about autumn. When I look at the cover I think "Yep. That's autumn!"

THE GOD SPEAR.

The other book that makes me think of autumn: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

Left side of image is a meme with a month worth of daily writing prompts for authors of fantasy fiction.

The right side of the image shows the book cover of THE GOD SPEAR, fourth book of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Cover is reads, golds, and oranges and shows a young woman walking down a country lane toward a strange, antler-crowned hill.

Words to the right of the cover read: GODS. HOPE. A little bit of forbidden love.. Okay. Lust.

Free Friday

Sharing an update today. I've had a couple of very productive weeks!

Rites of Departure is pretty much ready to publish (just waiting on artwork now.)

Agent of Chaos went to my editor!

I figured out how to end The Mage War Chronicles too.

9/10 #FantasyIndiesSeptember

Knowledge is pretty important to her success as a Watcher, so Arlise is always looking to better understand who (or what) she’s dealing with on a given case, but she’s not going to compromise her morals to obtain it.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Something in your WIP that surprised you: I was just posting about him! Petal, my new favorite fairy, came out of truly nowhere and is now one of my favorite characters in the whole book

#FantasyIndiesSeptember What power would my MC want? Eldara’s entire story hinges on her burning jealousy of her family. Her parents are famous for their ability to turn into dragons. She’d give anything to be able to do that too
