By Antoni Clavé (1913-2005), Harlequin, 1948, oil on canvas, 81 x 65 cm (31 7/8 x 25 5/8 inches), photo: Christie’s Paris, 6 Dec 2017. More info in ALT. #arthistory #paintimg #oilpainting

A painting of a harlequin (not the DC character), playing a guitar. Very Picasso-esque. From Artnet: “Antoni Clavé was a Spanish painter, printmaker, and set designer celebrated for his dark and lyrical abstractions. Largely influenced by French impressionists like Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, Clavé developed his own style of collage using paint along with materials such as wood and metal to create richly textured and layered compositions. He frequently employed newspapers and other printed materials in his works in a manner reminiscent of the French artist movement of affichistes. Born in Barcelona, Spain on April 5, 1913, Clavé received his formal training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona under artists such as Angel Ferrant and Félix Mestres Borrel. He was notably also a theatrical designer, creating sets for opera and ballet, and was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design, for his work on the film Hans Christian Andersen (1952). Today, his work can be found in the collections of the Paris Museum of Modern Art, the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others. The Catalan artist died on August 31, 2005 in Saint Tropez, France.”

Look down, not up. That crossed pair of red rackets on the ground - abandoned, forgotten mid-game - says more about childhood than the boy's frozen pose ever could. Portrait of Kennett Dixon Playing Shuttlecock, William Beechey, c. 1788-1792. #art #WilliamBeechey #PortraitPainting #ArtHistory #m...

A young child, Kennett Dixon, dressed in an 18th-century black velvet suit with a white ruffled collar and an oversized black hat topped with dark feathers, stands on a stone step in a wooded park landscape. He gazes upward with one arm raised, watching a shuttlecock fly overhead against a cloudy blue sky. In his other hand he holds a red-framed hand mirror. Below him, near the base of the stone step, a pair of red battledore rackets lie crossed and discarded on the ground, along with a small blue-handled i

ERIKA GIOVANNA KLIEN (1900 - 1957), “The Driller”, 1951. Private collection.
Erika Giovanna Klien was an Austrian-American artist at the forefront of the Viennese Kineticism movement.
#arthistory #art #Labor #Kineticism

Erika Giovanna Klien was an Austrian-American artist at the forefront of the Viennese Kineticism movement. Mixing elements of Cubism, Futurism and Constructivism, Klien’s art focused on capturing dynamic movement on canvas. She was passionate about theater and dance and many of her subjects were dancers in motion. She took her expertise in twirling bodies and applied the same techniques to birds in flight and rotating machinery. Like Futurism, Kineticism looked to modern life and technology for inspiration. “The Driller” from 1951 was the artist looking back to an earlier work she completed in 1923, but this later work captures the workman’s every move as he works the drill whereas the 1923 painting was more straight-forward. Using tonal shadows and simplified forms, Klien created a work that is modern in subject and atmosphere. There is little detail but intricate detail is neither needed nor missed.

Saturday vibes...

An artist at work in his studio. The atmosphere is one of hushed creativity, where time slows down and the only thing that matters is the canvas.

Adriaen van Ostade, "The Painter in His Workshop" (1633)

Adriaen van Ostade, "The Painter in His Workshop" (1633) • A 17th-century oil painting depicting an artist at work inside a dimly lit, rustic workshop. The painter is seated in a worn chair with his back partially to the viewer, focused intently on a small landscape painting balanced on a wooden easel. The high-ceilinged room is cluttered with artistic tools, bottles, and scattered papers. In the shadowed background, an apprentice stands near a bench, quietly preparing materials in the soft light filtering through a leaded window.

Rest-Entering a Baroque Mirror by Nam Kyung-Min, 2009, Korean Art Museum Association (South Korea)

#ArtHistory #ContemporaryArt #SymbolicComposition

In this painting, Nam subverts how a mirror traditionally operates. Rather than reflecting the objects positioned in front of the glass, the mirror reflects objects existing on the same surface as the mirror itself. This strange visual coincidence creates a "mindscape" or "meta-reality" that distorts stable perception.

The artwork is part of her celebrated series exploring the intersection of interior spaces, historical art homage, and the psychology of the artist.

The resting place in this story comes from later tradition, not the Bible itself. Gerard David turns that pause into something emotionally real: refuge, exhaustion, and danger held at once. What do you feel first—relief or unease?

"The Grim American Gothic: The New Regionalism."

In 1930, "American Gothic" captured a stern, unsmiling heartland.
Nearly a century later, this composition echoes that exact aesthetic—trading the rural farmhouse for a Washington balcony.
