Always love seeing Sooty Shearwaters especially up close. Such sleek and elegant birds. I always find it amazing how they fly with such little energy expenditure! You could say they’re shearing the water 😂

Amazing last trip on the Stornoway ferry for the year! Sabine’s gull lifer ✅ and Pomarine Skua year tick ✅ bring my year list to 205! 🎉

Other highlights included plenty of Sooty and Manx Shearwaters, White-tailed Eagle, Little Gull and great views of Gannets

I'm not sure who won the argument in the end - the razorbill or the gannet.

With many seabirds now beginning to migrate to wintering grounds, there’s still some time to see them at coastal and inland sites before they depart.
Keep an eye out for adults and juveniles alike, such as this young Arctic Tern! #Seabirds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social

Jumped aboard the Leach's Petrel train this evening, with a single bird from Leasowe Gunsite...also a Grey Phalarope (west), Arctic Tern, Manx Shearwater, Razorbill, and an Osprey working its way along the coast #LeachsPetrel #wirral #osprey #UKBIRDING #seabirds

c40 Leach's Petrel flew out of the river past Crosby throughout the morning. Seemed a real lack of any other seabirds though. No Gannets, Auks or Skuas for us and only one Manxie🧐 Did get a nice fly by from a 2ndw Med gull though. #Seabirds

Pomerine Skua gave a close fly past during a fab pelagic trip from Tavira, Algarve, yesterday morning. Dark phase, sub-adult. Also good numbers of Cory’s Shearwaters and Wilson’s Petrels 😀.

Over the past week, we’ve received additional colony count data from the 2026 season for 16 SMP species, including Great Skua!
If you haven’t submitted your data yet, there’s still time before the October 31st deadline. #Seabirds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social

Next: a mixed group of #seabirds and #dolphins were seen at a feeding event but were SOO far away that we couldn't identify the dolphins. Alex's photos reveal the tall, sharply curved dorsal fin of Risso's dolphin, a species we've seen a few times at this point and one of my favourites.

Distant sea surface, with dorsal fin and back of a surfacing Risso's dolphin and several shearwaters flying nearby or sat on the water surface.Distant sea surface, with dorsal fin and back of a surfacing Risso's dolphin and several shearwaters flying nearby or sat on the water surface.

Belated photos from my North Atlantic trip of a few weeks ago. These are from Alex Srdic, who has a much better camera than me. First: #seabirds. My first Great skua, then a Great shearwater (a species we see often on these trips), and a group of Manx with a Sooty shearwater visible near the middle

New paper out! Prey size shapes offspring quality! Common eider ducklings may face an increased risk of thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency when their mothers choose to feed on larger prey. #Ecology #Seabirds #MarineEcology #Eiderhttps://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0356777

Really proud of this paper. It reflects 16 years of effort of kind, compassionate humans who - despite minimal funding and overwhelming #ecogrief - did not give up 💪 #seabirds #plastics #TimeSeries
