Did you scope out that track listing on Lenny Kaye’s Nuggets Anthology? It included eight songs that earned US #OneHitWonder honors… and two more US #OneHitWonder honorees with songs other than the hits that earned ‘em their honors! #LennyKaye #Nuggets #OneHitWondered

“Psychotic Reaction” by Count Five also got an important second life in 1972 when rock writer Lenny Kaye chose the legendary garage rock classic for Elektra’s double-LP anthology Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968. #CountFive #LennyKaye #OneHitWondered

Legendary music critic Lester Bangs helped turn Count Five into garage-rock legends… In his sprawling ‘Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung,’ first published in Creem in 1971… Bangs treated “Psychotic Reaction” as a blueprint for the unsophisticated rock he loved. #OneHitWondered

Count Five’s follow-up single, “Peace of Mind,” never charted on the #Hot100, bubbling under at #125. The group was finished by 1969 as band members concentrated on college, avoiding disruption of their draft deferments. #CountFive #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

With a hit on its hands, Double Shot quickly pushed Count Five into making an LP. It arrived in October 1966 and included originals like “Pretty Big Mouth” & “The World,” and with a cover of The Who’s “My Generation.” The album reached #122 on the #Billboard 200 album chart #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

🇺🇸/🇨🇦 singer/songwriter & roots legend Jesse Winchester chose to leave the US when he received his draft notice for the Vietnam War in 1967, rather than report for military service... He packed up his guitar and moved to Montreal, Canada, where he lived in exile for many years. #OneHitWondered

Count Five turning down big money to stay in school is usually told as a ‘college instead of rock stardom’ story… but there was another pretty good reason. Some of ‘em were of draft age, and staying enrolled could help them hang onto their student deferments during the Vietnam War. #OneHitWondered

At the height of “Psychotic Reaction,” Count Five faced an unusual choice… tour full-time or stay in college. The group reportedly turned down $1 million worth of bookings so they could return to college. #CountFive #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Double Shot co-owner/producer Hal Winn made a crucial change with a razor blade... He cut a section out, copied the ‘rave-up’ from the middle, and spliced it onto the end where it fades out. It made the single ‘lose control’ all over again just as it ends. #HalWinn #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

A distinctive part of “Psychotic Reaction” was its middle ‘rave-up.’ After ‘And it feels like this!,’ the song suddenly kicks into a frantic instrumental passage, building speed and intensity... Very reminiscent of The Yardbirds’ explosive treatment of “I’m a Man.” #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Count Five released their signature anthem, “Psychotic Reaction,” in 1966 on the Hollywood indie label Double Shot Records. Fuzz-guitar hook, wheezing harmonica, stop-start dynamics... and that famous middle ‘rave-up’ that was a tip of the hat to the British Invasion. #OneHitWondered #MusicSky
