Killing dogs doesn't stop rabies.
WHO says there is no evidence that removing dogs alone has significantly affected the spread of rabies.
Yet dogs continue to pay the price when authorities reach for killing instead of effective disease control.
Dogs aren’t only at risk from rabies. They’re pivotal to eliminating it.
This #WorldRabiesDay, we celebrate the dogs at the heart of rabies elimination – and those working to reach and protect them. #StrongerTogether

This recipe book compiled 1644-1691 includes 3 cures 'Against Biting of a Mad dog'. Could this be rabies in the archive? #worldrabiesday
🧵
1. 'A poultice for ye biting of a mad dog' made with the bitten person's urine, boiled bread, turpentine and rose or chamomile oil applied to the bite.
A dog living on the street isn't a rabid dog.
A stray dog isn't automatically a public health threat.
When fear of rabies becomes fear of dogs, good public health policy can very quickly become bad animal welfare policy.
We need to know the difference.
Today is #WorldRabiesDay.

Rabies is preventable.
WHO says vaccinating at least 70% of dogs in areas at risk is the most effective way of preventing human rabies deaths.
The answer is vaccination. Not fear. Not persecution. Not indiscriminate killing.
Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear but it is also preventable.
#Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect animals and people from this deadly disease. 🐶💉
🛡️Prevention saves lives.

Today is #WorldRabiesDay. Rabies is deadly. It is also preventable. And protecting people from rabies does not require us to wage war on dogs. Today we're going to talk about what actually works. 🐾💙
It’s #WorldRabiesDay. Vaccinate your pets. If you encounter a bat, go to your doctor for post exposure prophylaxis. Rabies is almost universally fatal after symptoms begin. Don’t risk it.
