Why did you choose this particular film?:
I like Woody Guthrie, I've read the book it's based on, and I've not seen it.

Have you seen this movie before?:
No.

Would you recommend this film? Why or why not?:
Yes. Adapting Guthrie's autobiography, it gives you an incredibly shot view of he Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and the struggles of American workers as Woody's career begins.

Which character were you most able to identify with or connect with? In what way?:
David Carradine as Woody Guthrie, in his not wanting to be pushed into non-union or even non-worker songs in his shows.

Best line or memorable quote:
Heavy Chandler: I don't know if you knew it or not, but you're looking at an insane man.

Were you surprised by the ending? What would you do differently?:
No. I wouldn't do anything differently.

Is the composer/musician/band/group featured in the film one you regularly listen to?:
Yes, I listen to Woody Guthrie quite often.

What new information did you learn?:
None, I'd already read the book that the film is based on.

Genre: Drama
Starring: William Eadie, Tommy Flanagan, Mandy Matthews
Directed by: Lynne Ramsay
Produced by: Gavin Emerson

Awards achieved: BAFTAs - Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why did you choose this particular film?:
That Sinking Feeling is on at the cinema in a couple of weeks

Have you seen this movie before?:
No

Would you recommend this film? Why or why not?:
Yes. Grimmand gritty 1973 Glasgow seen through the eyes of a fragile young boy, haunted by the accidental death of his friend.

Which character were you most able to identify with or connect with? In what way?:
William Eadie as James Gillespie, because I also didn't really fit in as a kid and I, too, "don't fucking like football".

Best line or memorable quote:
Kenny: Goodbye, Snowball

Were you surprised by the ending? What would you do differently?:
No. Wouldn't do anything differently.

How well do you feel the film portrayed your region? What subtle details were there that "completed" the picture?:
While I wasn't here at the time the film is set, the film benefits from being filmed in Glasgow as well as a Glaswegian cast (as far as I can tell), giving it a sense of place that can be lost otherwise.

Anything else you'd like to add?:

Trailer youtu.be/xJlnv-5QId8

Challenge #37: A natural disaster film
Date challenge completed: 2026-09-19

Movie title: Earthquake
Year released: 1974
Aspect ratio: 2.2
Run time: 122min
Genre: Disaster
Starring: Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner, George Kennedy, Lorne Greene
Directed by: Mark Robson
Produced by: Mark Robson
Written by: George Fox, Mario Puzo
Music by: John Williams
Awards achieved: Oscars - Best Sound, Special Achievement Award for Visual Effects
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐½

Why did you choose this particular film?:
I've not seen it before, and it's got George Kennedy

Have you seen this movie before?:
No

Would you recommend this film? Why or why not?:
Yes. An impressive ensemble cast and great effects carry a story of survivors and victims of a massive earthquake in LA.

Which character were you most able to identify with or connect with? In what way?:
I'm no cop, but George Kennedy as Sgt Lew Slade. He's suspended but his sense of duty compels him to help others.

Best line or memorable quote:
Dr Vance: This used to be a hell of a town.
Sgt Slade: Yeah…

Were you surprised by the ending? What would you do differently?:
I was surprised the end was so abrupt. I would have not lost track of some of the characters who just seem to disappear from the story.

What are some things you would do if you faced a similar disaster?:
Certainly not go into an underground building. I'd likely head down the street to Queens Park and get up the hill away from the chance of tenements collapsing into old coal mines or any watercourses and overhead power lines.

Anything else you'd like to add?:
Richard roundtree outfit as Miles is awesome.
