On this day in 1174, Adela of Ponthieu died. She was the widow of William de Warenne, 3rd Earl of Surrey and lord of Lewes, killed on the Second Crusade in 1148. Their daughter Isabel inherited the earldom. #OnThisDay #MedievalHistory #Sussex

A visit to Pevensey Castle in September.
Started in late 3rd Century #Pevensey is the largest of the #Roman ‘Saxon Shore’ fortresses. In 1066, William the Conqueror landed nearby to begin his invasion of England, and started a #castle utilising the Roman fortress walls.
