Perhaps the solution is to leave it out in a conspicuous place and let someone else perform the taste test for me? No? Drat! The business end of a wax seal stamp. Apparently made of aluminum since magnets aren't attracted to it. About three-quarters of an inch in diameter. I'm guessing in was made back in the 1970s or 1980s and sold by Hallmark or some such store. The other side screws into a wooden handle, allowing that handle to be used with multiple stamps. This particular stamp features a fancy capital A (in reverse of course). I used to have a special light blue rectangular candle (with a simple ivy design on the wide sides) to use with it. I'd light the candle, tilt it, allow a few drops of melting wax to drip onto an envelope I wanted to seal, press the stamp into the hot wax, then let the wax cool and solidify with the A big and clear enough for the entire world to see (if the world happened to be in my room at the time). It all seemed rather magical back then, an act and a thing that made me one with all those historic kings and queens who'd seal their envelopes with their official seal - and woe unto those who dared break that seal without authorization! Unfortunately, I don't think many of my seals made their way safely through the US postal system intact (and lacking the power of a king or queen there was damn little I could do about it). Oh, well. I guess it really didn't matter since neither my first nor last name starts with an A. (I guess I forgot this when I made my purchase. *Sigh*)

A fibrous round that's a blue-purple color divided into seven sections by seven irregular orange bands. But what exactly is it? A cloth bracelet? No, it's not elastic enough to fit over the typical hand. A Cheerio dressed up for Mardi Gras? No, it measures 3 inches across - much too big for a cereal piece. An angel's halo with a bad infection? NOPE! It is, in fact, nothing more exotic than the cloth base that came with the Tibetan signing bowl I posted a photo of yesterday. The bowl sings loud and clear as it sits atop this ring of woven material that does nothing to dampen the sound. Although more functional than beautiful, and more of a supporting character than a star, it stands as a reminder that every round thing has a certain nobility to it and is worth celebrating. (Unless, of course, it really IS a Cheerio dressed up for Mardi Gras and I'm just too stupid to recognize the fact - in which case I sincerely apologize for misleading everyone.)

Overhead view of a brass Tibetan singing bowl. About 3.5 inches in diameter. Allegedly handcrafted by artisans in Nepal. It came with a 5-inch-long dark brown wooden pestle-like striker that is used to start and maintain the singing. First you tap the outside of the bowl near the rim with the striker to start the ringing tone, then you run the striker slowly along the outside of the rim to sustain the tone almost indefinitely, taking care to keep the striker as vertical as possible. (Some compare the action to slowly stirring a pot of soup.) The sound is said to aid meditation and induce calm - and perhaps it does for many people. I personally find the initial tone quite pleasing and was amazed at how carefully moving the striker around the rim really does sustain the tone. Oddly, however, the movement of the striker can also greatly amplify the tone until (to my ears, anyway) it starts to sound just like an air raid siren. NOT the best thing to induce calm or a meditative mood but it might be a fun way to annoy those next-door neighbors with the dog that never stops barking. Research continues!

Small wall-mounted barometer, just 3 inches in diameter. Has black numerals on a white background. A black needle indicates the current air pressure while a silver marker needle allows one to keep track of how much the pressure has changed since the last reading. A silver casing. A glass face. It's pretty standard as barometers go, so I won't go into more detail than that. It was a recent purchase that prompted memories of my first barometer purchase many years ago. My family had taken me with them on a special shopping expedition to the old Hudson's Department Store in downtown Detroit. It was the largest store by far that I've ever been in, perhaps 25 stories high and with a footprint that seems to have occupied a full city block. I was allowed to buy one thing and I chose... a barometer. It seemed magical at the time (and it still does) - a way to measure at least one of the invisible forces that control my life without my being able to sense it directly. That Hudson's closed in 1983 and the building was imploded in 1998 but memories of my visit endure. The barometer I bought back then is now as absent from this world as the building I bought it in but the barometer I've now posted a photograph of provides me with a sweet connection to them both and to a time that will never come again. If you're ever presented with the opportunity to buy an item that does the same thing for you for a mere 7 dollars, you might want to jump on it.

Opaque white plastic disperser/diffuser cap from a bottle of La Choy soy sauce (as seen from the side that snaps onto the glass bottle). It measures 13/16ths of an inch in diameter. (I've posted photos of more than 500 round things now and I think this is the first with that exact measurement. Odd!) The small hole in the center allows one to shake out small amounts of soy sauce. Removing this cap allows one to pour out greater quantities of the sauce. It's a rather ingenious way to keep one from accidentally drowning one's food in dark liquid. I wish I had invented it! But I wish even more that I could make one for my mouth that would prevent me from talking too much. If I had to vigorously shake my head to get each noun and verb out I'd probably have more friends. When it comes time to howl again at the moon, however, I could just remove my opaque white plastic mouth cap and let 'er rip. *Leaving now to visit the US Patent Office website.*
