3/3 If kinesin can encode information, what cellular functions might exploit this hidden channel? Could we harness it for bio‑nanotech computing? Share your thoughts! #academicsky #biophysics #philsci

1/3 What if the tiny motor that ferries cargo inside cells not only walks but also writes information into its steps? Could a single kinesin act as a nanoscale information engine? #academicsky #biophysics #philsci

1/3 Your cell's outer membrane is a fluid — but how fluid? Measuring viscosity in honey is easy. For a 5-nanometer-thick lipid bilayer, it took a new molecular-dynamics method. Would you guess it's closer to olive oil or to water? #academicsky #biophysics #philsci

It is widely held that fitness is affected by population size, 'n.' But Grant Ramsey shows, in a new #openaccess paper in @jrnlofphil.bsky.social, that this familiar claim rests on both mathematical and conceptual mistakes.🔥

1/3 Your cells pull things inside using entropy. Not a chemical lock-and-key — the cytoskeleton's own jiggling nudges receptors together until they're close enough to bind. The first step of endocytosis may be pure statistics. #academicsky #biophysics #philsci

I'm finally reading Denis Walsh's "Organisms, agency, and evolution" (2015) and some footnotes are just hilarious! 😆

Screenshot from one of the pages of the book. In the main text, it says "Cilia are an adaptive response only to the way that paramecia experience the viscosity of the water, and a caudal peduncle is a response only to the way that a porpoise experiences it. A caudal peduncle on a paramecium would be about as adaptive as cilia on a porpoise." The corresponding footnote reads "I chose an example that sounds cilia on porpoise.". I laughed out loud on the train when reading this :D

The Identity of Stem Cell Kinds
– Guglielmo Militello, Louis Paré, Eve Gazave & Lucie Laplane

Abstract in alt text or read it here:

ABSTRACT. Although they share a same function and definition, there is a wide diversity across stem cells, reflected by the fact that stem cells are categorized into various types and subtypes. This diversity among stem cells raises a key philosophical question: do stem cells belong to a natural kind? Claims and arguments made by biologists and philosophers, far from converging toward a consensual response, highlight the need for more (interdisciplinary) investigation to advance this question. In response to this challenge, we explore the hypothesis that a phylogenetic approach may offer a productive framework for addressing these conceptual tensions. After describing the strengths and limitations of such a strategy, we discuss how it can advance fields like regenerative medicine and cancer therapies by clarifying stem cell diversity and improving therapeutic strategies.
