Need I mention the continuing explosion of the world’s population leading to likely famine, wars, diseases, and so on? We have twice as many people alive now as the combined total of all humans who have ever lived! Yet right-wingers are perennially on the attack against Planned Parenthood, here in the United States. We are no different from bacteria who overrun their petri dish only to die off. We certainly aren’t showing ourselves to be any smarter than that. How about the possibility of virulent epidemic that cannot be cured? Strains of micro-organisms are evolving that are immune to our much- touted antibiotics. But why go on? If you are not aware of these things, you are from some other planet. If you are dismissing these facts, you are in actual psychological denial of your dire situation. If you are not paying attention, you are spending your life desperately running away. No, I will not dwell on the measurements and technical data to drive home my points. BPM II is characterized by “no exit,” hellish feelings that are related to the situation of the fetus in late pregnancy when the confines of the womb become ever more apparent but there is as yet no indication of any possibility of relief. BPM III relates to the birth process itself, the birth struggle, which is still characterized by feelings of compression and suffering but in which there is movement and change and thus hope of relief through struggle. If BPM II can be compared to hell, where there is no hope, BPM III is more like purgatory. Finally, BPM IV relates to the actual entry into the world, the termination of the birthing process, and is characterized by feelings of triumph, relief, and high, even manic, elation. George W. Bush-League Players To set the stage, I feel it is illuminating to relate an event I vividly remember seeing on the financial news in America, on CNBC, one day, in October of 2008. This occurred as the DOW was experiencing 500 point losses in a day, unprecedented except for during the stock market crash leading to the Great Depression. One of the expert trader/commentators — a person I’d often seen on the show — was being interviewed on the floor of the actual exchange, seeming to be surrounded by evidence of the carnage. There were actual strewn papers and such, just like in the old days, as I remember it, as stocks were tumbling (again!) with such rapidity that even the old call out system was being implemented, for some reason — for certain financial instruments anyway. And there had been the confusion and the outcries, and yes, even the panic that one would expect to see in an old movie about the Stock Market Crash. Environmental nay-sayers are arguing that we “fixed” this problem, as part of their stance that we need not worry about what we are doing to the planet. But that is not true. One report, on CNN, had it that the ozone had been depleted by forty percent in the previous two months alone! The reporter announcing it seemed shaken. It was like watching someone be suddenly made aware that developments were unfolding, behind the smoke screen of media denial, that was going to have life-and- death pertinency to the lives of herself and her loved ones. Certainly, this is not the kind of thing normally put on her desk to announce on air. Sure enough, we were not to hear anything more about it. That, along with so much else we never are told about that is directly looming over us. Nor need I elaborate on the nuclear threat — whether precipitated by terrorists, rogue nations, or accident. We know, but do not want to, of the possibility of any one or more of these mad actors employing weapons of mass destruction, possibly leading to ever-mounting rounds of retaliation with eventually no one left standing. Relatedly we push out of our minds the threat of other kinds of weapons — such as biological weapons — getting out of control and creating a worldwide epidemic or holocaust.

He noted a tendency for growth and healing to occur in a progressive way through these levels. The sensory band is the level of expanded sensory awareness and is usually initially encountered by participants. The biographical band is the realm of the personal unconscious wherein unintegrated and traumatic memories and material from childhood and one’s personal history are retrieved, often relived, and integrated. The perinatal level of experience usually follows after dealing with the biographical material and involves the remembering, re-experiencing, and integrating of material that is related to the time prior to and surrounding birth. The transpersonal band, the level of spiritual experience, is usually reached after dealing with the other three levels. Imprints: The Lifelong Effects of the Birth Experience, published in 1983, among other things places birth as the determining factor in creating basic personality constructs, called sympathetic and parasympathetic, which roughly coincide with the more common terms introversion and extroversion. Janov’s work is more empirical and neurophysiologically rooted than most in the field, and this was especially true of this work. Nevertheless, while the book is recognized in the field, Janov and his work have not gotten anywhere near the respect and attention they deserve. His therapy involving having deep feeling experiences, primaling, of all kinds — his primal therapy, involving the re-experience of anger, sadness, grief, childhood, early life, birth, and painful events from all other times in life and involving the re- experience and release of all possible feelings — is reduced to and ridiculed as “primal scream therapy,” from the provocative title of his first book. Culture The point is that this intensive mother-infant interaction is the foun- dation for the extra sociability required of humans and for culture, with all its components of language, need for communication, and structure in our social groups. So, because of secondary altriciality ... that extra time of depend- ency as infants ... which is caused by prematurity, which is necessitated by the size of our skulls and brains, which size is the result of the overwhelming birth trauma of humans with its conse- quent need to be repressed in order for humans to function, which was caused because we began standing up and so altered the arrangement of our pelvic bones, we developed both language as well as the need for human interaction, the sociability, which is the basis for culture as well as human empathy. Regarding empathy, humans have been fitted to survive in groups where there is extensive communication of needs and desires. While other mammals care about the pain of their offspring and seek to mollify them and are capable of grieving, we are the only species who developed the ability to empathize to such an extent that we are the only ones to have psychotherapists. Ed said he needed this job as spokesperson, as the economy hit him hard too. Well, he’s making up for being out of the limelight, it seems. For while humans apparently can’t see what‘s coming, Mister Ed shows off quite an animal’s instinctive knowledge. He sees clearly: far into the past and into the immediate future. And he’s fed up and won’t be shut up, taking especially the “filthy rich” to task. Apparently animals know a lot more about humans than we do about ourselves. While our comeuppance is not pretty (that horse has quite the mouth on him — you’d never have gotten that from the show! and a rather gruesome imagination), it is not all humans he condemns. DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS II Page xxviii …volumes and all the prior ideas which — one by one — were used to pry back the boards upon which we stand which unthinkingly create our arbitrary platform within Reality. The culmination and purpose of this entire journey approaches its fruition here. In this third book of Dance of the Seven Veils, then, we look at the last Veil, which has to do with our peri-conceptional experiences. That is to say, the experiences around conception. Peri-conception extends back to our emergence into Form with the creation of ovum, first, and then sperm. It continues with the actual events of the coming together of ovum and sperm at conception. It passes on into the events of the fertilized egg, the blastosphere, of implantation, and finally, of early embryonal existence. We find the deepest imprints on our human reality here, peri- conceptionally. Hence it is our first, our deepest, our initial Veil across our ultimate identity as Divinity and our experience in the No-Form State. This Seventh Veil — the first reduction from Cosmic Awareness, the first cookie cutter on the dough of our physical reality — establishes our physical world, in many ways. We find here the creation of duality as perceived in the world, of thing and no-thing, of self and other, of forward and backward. We discover here the philosophical basis of our human reality. These are the things we believe, without any doubt. It will require the removal of all the preceding and overlying Veils to have a chance to grok what is to be gotten here. For at this point we border on the truly astounding and mind-blowing.

PREFACE Page xx …worthy of one’s efforts and attention in life. Similarly, it shines a light on proper and harmful ingredients in child-caring, so it would be invaluable to any parent. Most of the material in the foregoing has been included in other works. Specifically, they are Prodigal Human, Planetmates, Psychology of Apocalypse, Dance of the Seven Veils I, and the forthcoming (expected sometime in 2021) Back to the Garden. I have focused on this topic somewhat in Wounded Deer and Centaurs, as well, where I related it to the changing personality structures coming of postmodern times and their relation to pre- and perinatal influences, the environmental crisis, and activism. Others of my books have traveled through this terrain at times, too. Nonetheless, it seemed a good idea to bring all this material together around this theme of Identity, to re-slant them, and to see what would come of it. The issue of who to be is one of the primary concerns of humans; it is vitally important to address it now and at this time in history with the stakes so high and the need to bring forth a new vision of who to be in line with what we need if we are to survive patriarchy, environmental collapse, and the rising worldwide fascism coming up as a direct reaction to the fear come of multiculturalism, identity loss, and identity confusion.

His many works, providing a framework for conceptualizing perinatal and transpersonal experiences, are a profound and useful starting point for an investigation into this area. In his use of LSD beginning in 1956 for psychotherapy, called psycholytic therapy, he discovered four levels of experience of the unconscious: the sensory, the biographical, the perinatal, and the transpersonal. Page 27 Victims Du Jour By the way, I might mention that while genuine sexual assault and child sexual abuse is a reality that has long been with us and is only now really coming to light (thankfully), the similarity of this early perinatal experience of ungentle mouth clearing to sexual assault may have something to do with the epidemic of reports of infant sexual abuse that are coming out of counselor’s therapy rooms. Confused interpretations of these reports can happen because most counselors and psychotherapists are ignorant of birth and perinatal trauma and yet more and more of them are allowing bits and pieces of regressive techniques into their standard professional arsenals. In addition, they throw in these techniques, most often, without qualification or experience with these techniques, and oftentimes out of knowledge gained solely from books or second-handedly ... not to mention rarely, because of professional arrogance, having experienced or undergone these regressions themselves.

Thirdly, with the additional load of birth trauma, and trauma from fetal malnutrition, which we will get to next, you can imagine how much more unhappy we are than our cousins. We come into the world weeping and wailing, screaming and turning red and flailing about. Our cousins do not. Hence during that extra time of dependence and even for a while afterward, there are additional emotional needs that human mothers have to take care of that their sister mothers do not have to do. Babies are often in pain; mothers must coo, pacify, hum, rock, and make nice. You can see where this is a considerable prod for even more mother-infant interaction and communication — both verbally, audibly, in the direction of increasing facility in language, and visually, by means of facial cues and body language. Culture The point is that this intensive mother-infant interaction is the foundation for the extra sociability required of humans and for culture, with all its components of language, need for communication, and structure in our social groups.
