#WIPSnips #WritintCommunity #month

Screenshot of the following novel excerpt: Jen gently moved away from Ella to let Ashley take her place, then walked toward the registration desk for the TV remote. She caught sight of the desk calendar as she reached for the remote. Every month she marked the full moon with a red circle. Things always went ratbat on the full moon. That the “luna” in “lunacy” actually referred to the moon’s effect on the human psyche had not surprised her to learn. A more intense lunar pull meant more intense lunacy; uptakes in lunacy meant uptakes in emergencies. Scientific research might not have proven a correlation, but Jen had never known a full moon when the ER hadn’t descended into chaos. It had gotten so she could barely look at a pickax. Ella showed all the signs of a sundowner, a patient whose mental state noticeably worsened at night, especially on full moons. Turning the TV off made it easier to hear the steady stream of water dripping off her. Their soaking wet clothes had left puddles all over the tile floor, but she couldn’t help that. A shriek from Ella kept her from thinking about it for too long anyway. Ella had Ashley’s shoulders in a death grip and her eyes locked onto the hospital's name displayed on the wall behind the desk. “Daniella Delouse Memorial? Are they talking about me? Who spelled my name that way? Why does it say memorial? Ashley, why does it say memorial?” Definitely a sundowner.

“A #month isn’t so long if you consider that someone needed to clean up all the blood,” Veronica reasoned.

Rune laughed at her antics as she let herself get wrapped up in a hug. “Sweety, darling! Do not lie to me! You watched Marcus play around for all those months, so there must be something you want to reenact with him!” “There’s…” She sighed. Her emerald eyes sparkled, and she opened her mouth. Then she closed it again. “There’s nothing I can think of.” So Therese began to whisper to her. “Marcus the explorer lands on a distant world and meets Rune, an alien girl from a palaeolithic civilisation, and he doesn’t know how to survive in the wilds so she has to warm him up with her body in the chill of the night.” Rune twitched in her arms, but she said nothing. “Rune is the ancient avatar of the mysterious Mythmakers, protector of their ruined machinery, and when Marcus the adventurer awakens her from dormancy, she must restrain and imprison him for his trespass and study his sexy body for her enigmatic masters.” She giggled, shaking her head. “No!” “Ooh, I know! I read once about an old Earth myth of a creature called a sucky-bus that can only live by drinking the come of men.” "You're making that up."

One afternoon, they lay in his low bed, cradled by the earthen walls. She closed her eyes. Another life, hundreds of years past, flashed in her memory. As if it had happened just moons ago. “Oh! I remember another one!” Niwa sat up, holding Ukiuor’s hand in hers. He studied her face, tickling his fingers on her arm. “We were pale. Poor. In the southern… Appalachian? Mountains. I had to leave you. My wife. To fight the rich men’s war. To ‘protect ourselves from the power-hungry North’.”
