The #CorrectTheMap campaign thinks #Africa is the center of the world? 😆

Screenshot of text: 6. How can I spot a misleading map? Look out for these clues: Does Greenland look as big as Africa? That’s a red flag. Is Africa near the center of the map, or pushed to the side? Are countries near the equator unusually small?

Some news for cartographers, from the highly-sensationalized #CorrectTheMap campaign

(Their mission to get rid of #Mercator-projection illustrative world maps is a good fight, but a lot of their rhetoric is very ill-informed/misleading.)

Screenshot of text: 5. What should we look for in a good world map? There are two key rules: Preserve area: Countries should appear in their correct size relative to one another. Roundedness: The map should still look like a globe flattened gently—no wild stretching. No map is perfect, but some are fairer. The Equal Earth, Gall-Peters, and other equal-area projections do a better job at showing the world truthfully. 6. How can I spot a misleading map? #mercator #eckertIV

How threatened your overinflated, petty, narcissistic ego must feel to be the only nation officially objecting to Africa being correctly sized on a map. Will keeping it small make you feel bigger?

Seriously. Shame on you, USA. And, might I add, GROW UP?? 🙄

@livingmaps.bsky.social Following a UN resolution passed to promote map projections that better reflect the true size of countries on global maps. Professor James Cheshire explains the complexities of the Mercator map and how such maps impact the way we view the world

Google transaction:
"A welcome (r)evolution: #France is abandoning the #Mercator projection in favor of #EckertIV.

Mercator had its merits in the 16th century. But it was time to acknowledge that, in reality, #Greenland is 14 times smaller than #Africa."

#mercator

“UN General Assembly endorses a new #WorldMap that shows more accurately Africa’s size.”

Bye bye #Mercator. Guess who objected.
