“I know. Naïve.” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Anyway, a woman spotted me reading it, and we ended up talking for an hour. Turns out, it wasn’t the book that caught her attention. It was the sticker. She was part of this group of women who used to rewrite the endings, then sneak into bookstores and swap them out. They’d leave these stickers on the front so other women could find them.”
Jacqueline’s eyebrows rose. “Do they still do this?”
“Not any more,” Shannon said. “She said her wife—she called her her wife anyway—writes her own books now.” Shannon debated her next words, then took a sip of wine, borrowing a little courage from it before continuing. “I guess I wanted you to have this book because I think everyone deserves a happily ever after.”

Arlo stared at me for a long moment, aqua-coloured eyes boring into me thoughtfully, before he finally inquired, “Is it ‘cause you’re only attracted to women?”

My brows rose to my hairline and I sputtered, “I beg your pardon?”

I wanted to wipe the irritatingly satisfied grin that he gave in response from his smug face. “Tell me I’m wrong.”

“You’re wrong!” I insisted without hesitation, leaning forward and resting my elbows on my knees. “I’m attracted to men. Of course I’m attracted to men. Who told you otherwise?” I looked at Blaire who shook her head, seemingly trying to suppress her bemusement, before returning my gaze to Arlo. “Do you need proof? I could kiss you…I’ll kiss you right now.” It was not my most dignified moment. I was only happy my mother was not there to see me.

It’s about her, and Waffles. “If…if you wanted, maybe then you could take Waffles and ask with Zaya or Tiff if you could stay with them for the last two weeks. And I can stay in the apartment. Or…” she paused, then made herself continue, “maybe see if Ceres is around and if you could s-stay with her.” As soon as she’d said Ceres’ name, Vola wished she could take it back, but wasn't it worth it to have Nat sleep in safety? Wasn’t she just being….selfiish? The thought left her twisted inside beyond words, but if Nat really wanted to…to sleep next to someone else...then Vola should be happy for her. Right?
