The two hikers set the scale and give the path a direction, and the path itself, along with the thin trails in the valley, leads the eye toward the distant peak and hut. The one patch of light on the scree is the brightest, warmest note in an otherwise cool, muted frame, so it pulls the attention away from the cloud. The heavy cloud mass presses down on the wall and gives the image a sense of weather moving through rather than a fixed view, a theme common to alpine landscape work.
