And with that: Välkommen till Sörmlands väderlotteri! ⛅🎰
The first exciting train, the weird Sunday only open access Tågab service to Göteborg via Karlstad, passes in the shadow.

A locomotive in the blue-red former SJ livery with a Tågab logo hauls a rake of five rather old-fashioned carriages in silver livery with an orange-red stripe. The foreground and the train are in the shadow of a cloud, while the sky is rather bright with blue spots.

Buss it is! 🚍️ Once it's back i tjänst. Södermanlands Län is one of many Swedish counties with excellent bus branding. Service ist also ok with 2-hrly busses on Sun on this rather rural line. Rail photography without your own vehicle is, though not easy, absolutely possible in Sweden!

Neither, as the Buss leaves just before Mälartåg arrives. Fortunately, the station offers a good entertainment programme with a Pressbyrån (☕️!) and quite interesting trains passing through.

After consultation of timetables and forecasts for the rather changeable weather today, we end up on a Mälartåg to Stockholm again, where we change to another one to Gnesta. When we disembark with aching backs, a wide variety for onwards travel awaits us. Pendeltåg or Buss? 🤔

My right index finger’s been twitching nervously for a while – high time for a Photo day! But: Plan A, the Dalabanan IC, doesn't work due to a line closure. Plan B, the Mälar-Regina, doesn’t run at the weekend. We need a Plan C), as our hotel is already threatening us with meetings.

"Gateau" bakery was founded in Saltsjöbaden 1937. Even if there's no shop anymore, we have one of their fantastic bullar on the train on this quiet autumn afternoon. This is a lovely railway and I'm glad I managed to see it before the modernisation. Goodbye, Saltsjöbanen! 🥰

The Solsidan branch is even sleepier than the main branch to Saltsjöbaden. And it ends at this cute little station, which is now a restaurant and where the platform doubles as an outdoor seating area. It's all so peacefully quiet here. 🥰

At the tiny junction station of Igelboda 🦔, the secondary line to Solsidan ☀️ branches off. The Stockholm-Saltsjöbaden trains cross here, and a 2-car short train shuttles on the branch to Solsidan. It pulls into Igelboda behind the Stockholm train on the same track and turns there.

The first colorful leaves and the tranquillity on this afternoon are unmistakable signs that the cooler half of the year is approaching fast. 🍃🍁🥰
This will be one of the last winters for the old Saltsjöbanan trains. In 2029/30, they will be replaced by brand-new Skoda units.

Not particularly much going on in sleepy Saltsjöbaden on this quiet early autumn afternoon. I guess, this was much busier when the line was built more than a century ago.

Finally: A train! Using old tunnelbana Stock from the 1970s, the 18km long Saltsjöbanan connects the seaside resort Saltsjöbaden and a number of suburban towns to the centre of Stockholm. Given the huge rail replacement offer, I'm not surprised by the rather low demand on the train.

Next up: The Saltsjöbanan light rail. Heavily affected by the reconstruction of the Slussen node, ongoing since the founding of Stockholm mid 13th century, the line is currently cut back to Saltsjö-Järla in the suburbs. Fortunately there is an easy to understand replacement service.😬

It has been more than a day since the last light rail, about time to change that! At Årstaberg, we change to one of Tvärbanan's quirky trams for a short tangential trip to Sickla. Nomen est omen, I feel kind of sick(la) when looking at these horrible yellow panels inside the tram.

Another completely anonymous group member which isn't me wants to complete his Sweden route coverage, which is why we do a little detour down to Nynäshamn. 120km from Uppsala, all included in the 180 SEK 24-hrs ticket from SL. Take this, Arlanda Mafia!

"Some" of our two person group pay the 157 SEK protection money to the PPP mafia to leave the platform at Arlanda C and take the fast train to Stockholm. While I wait at Stockholm City for them to rejoin, I again conclude that I'm not a fan of the Citybanan's architecture...

Uppsala C the next morning. The station is very close to having a great track layout. Just next to it is the heritage railway station Uppsala Östra. We stay on the modern train platform though and board the Pendeltåg to Stockholm.

The train ends in Sala. The line towards the North is blocked, so we continue eastwards. And the train situation improved considerably, when two of Mälartåg's rather rare "Regina" EMU turned up. 🥰

Goodbye to our X2000 and hello Mälartåg ER1. This could be one of the best regional trains of our times - but they messed up the seats and the windows big time: Sitting on the train, it feels like there aren't any windows at all!
