A broken column on a gravestone traditionally symbolized a life cut short. An inverted torch could represent death while its still-burning flame suggested life continuing beyond it. Victorian cemeteries weren't simply burial grounds. They were libraries written in stone. #FairyTaleTuesday

In the Russian tale "Sivko-Burko," two eldest sons don't want to hold vigil at their father's grave as he requested, so they send the youngest, dubbed Ivan the Fool. During Ivan's vigil, the grave opens and the father's spirit emerges. He summons a magic horse, which he gives Ivan. #FairyTaleTuesday

In the German tale "Do Not Disturb the Rest of the Dead," a young woman declares she'll go to a graveyard at night and steal a crucifix from a fresh grave to prove her bravery. She's later found dead on the grave, her neck twisted, with her hand on the crucifix. #FairyTaleTuesday

The Bloody Ploughman apple is named after a Scottish tale of a ploughman who's shot dead for stealing apples from an estate. When his body is returned to his wife, she tosses the apples he stole, and they sprout into a tree that grows blood-red apples. #FairyTaleTuesday

The yew tree has been planted in British churchyards for centuries. Its extraordinary longevity, evergreen foliage, and ability to regenerate helped make it a powerful symbol of death and immortality. Some churchyard yews are older than the churches beside them. #FairyTaleTuesday

They planted the yew before they trusted the dark.

In folklore, its evergreen boughs symbolise eternal life and ward off restless spirits.

Holy ground. Haunted ground.

What guarded the dead was never meant to feed the living. 🕯️💀

A widespread cemetery superstition says you should hold your breath while passing a graveyard. Explanations vary: to keep from breathing in a spirit, to prevent the dead from entering you, or simply to avoid attracting their attention. Difficult advice beside a very large cemetery. #FairyTaleTuesday

In English folklore, the first creature buried in a churchyard becomes a "church grim" - a ghost who serves as that church's guardian. In order to avoid forcing a human spirit to shoulder this burden, a dog would often be buried under the church's cornerstone.
