[box] is a great technique in HS too, I definitely use it for exponents and logs.
log_base2 of 16 means 2 ^ [box] = 16

A6: I have it easy in secondary, I don't really assess it (for grades), there's too much else already being assessed.
And that actually helps with students becoming comfortable with math, it can be a more relaxed time that isn't about "answer-getting" but playing w/ math.

Aren't we doing Algebra from the jump? Aren't numerals abstract symbols we use to tell the story of our world? Aren't we doing algebra when we ask 1st graders to solve the problem 5 + [box] = 8? I love to ask them when 5 + [box] happens in their lives. You get great answers from kids! #ElemMathChat

AND it gives them power when they encounter secondary math. Builds confidence.

I think there's a tendency to think "algebra is doing real math" if you ever learned it, even when there are way easier methods, and you haven't done alg since undergrad (and maybe didn't even get it then). Using number sense instead of variables is valid math! #ElemMathChat
