BPMs Line Up with deMause’s Perinatal Schema

In any case, Stanislav Grof derived the basic perinatal matrices, BPMs for short. These are typical experiential constellations related to our births. They are complexes or patterns of feelings that as adults we carry with us, which are imprinted on us at the time of our births, which determine how we see the world and what we do in reaction to what we see. Grof’s basic perinatal matrices happen to be congruent with Lloyd deMause’s perinatal schema, which he uses to describe configurations of societal and historical events and the sequence in which they unfold.

However, these two theories, of Grof and deMause, were derived separately, and they employed vastly different tools of research. The one put forth by Stanislav Grof arose from actual experiential reports of folks who had “journeyed” into these profound places. And the other, Lloyd deMause’s, were discovered by him in the patterns of historical evidence, especially of the kind involving the words of historical personages; in the reports from media and historical documents; and in other evidence of what people were thinking about and how they were seeing the events of…

…glories in the implications of them for understanding our Reality, our non- separation from each other, our Identity as Self and Divinity, and for guidance for our lives.

In so doing, we peer through a portal wherein we are again one with the Universe. We find ourselves on the edge of a coming together as grand as that which we experienced at conception. We receive the gift of a heritage we long ago and mistakenly repudiated — a worldview in which we are seen as belonging, at home, and once again noble within the world we inhabit.

The Biological Veil

In Book One, as well, I establish there are biologically constituted realities. These are one of the screens of distortion across our perception of clear Reality. That is to say that reality, for humans, is constructed for us out of our unique biological set from an infinity of everything possible that could be or is in the Universe — something that Aldous Huxley (1954) called, Mind at Large.

I point out that everything that we experience in life, beginning even before conception, before the coming together of sperm and ovum that created us, are learning experiences and are formative. They create imprints that skew all experiences coming afterward; they set templates within which everything that comes after is configured.

…the fourth one needing to be removed as part of the process of cleansing the windows of perception.

So it is that the basic perinatal matrices are more than just thera- peutically relevant. They provide a heuristic for the understanding of the mind and motives of humans — our psychology — surpassing anything known before and rivaled only by the theoretical constructs of Arthur Janov, pertaining to the personal, not transpersonal, aspects of that same territory; and Lloyd deMause, focusing on the psychohistorical — the political, societal, and historical — implications of that terrain.

In my own writing you will see how I weave together these revelatory viewpoints on our lived reality — all three of them, Grof’s, Janov’s, and deMause’s — with other findings of my own. I bring to light clear patterns and overstandings incorporating their discoveries and conceptualizations yet feeding back into and adding to their understandings. Then I use all that to go further still into a paradigm, which I advance and hold out for inspection, incorporating it all. It becomes even clearer to what extent our lived experience arises — much like a plant following the journey of growth laid down in its DNA as encoded in its seed — out of patterns imprinted on us during this crucial time around the experience of our births and before.

The reality outside of that, which we think of as matter and as unconscious and unalive, is merely the aspect of our own reality from which we are temporarily cut off. It is our own consciousness; however it is the part of which we are unconscious. Or as I often point out, it is the part we have forgotten1 — perhaps even intentionally, as a choice made by our inherent Divinity. Which choice also we then forget.2

That unknown aliveness is a secret life in the Universe of matter: In essence there is a secret life of “stones.” Yes, the Universe is alive. And, yes, you are the Universe, you are that aliveness, but you have decided to become less so.

Grof refined these theoretical constructs over the course of the years. In the United States, his second home, he developed a non-drug modality to accomplish the same thing — the same access and the same healing. This technique, which involves the use of connected circular breathing, evocative music, artistic expression in the form of mandalas, and group sharing afterward, he called holotropic breathwork. Holotropic is the word he coined to describe the direction of the therapy, which is “turning toward” (tropikos) “wholeness” (holos).

So it was that in the United States, as a scholar-in-residence at Esalen Institute and then afterwards, Grof refined his spiritual-therapeutic modality, facilitating or overseeing tens of thousands more of such experiential journeys into these realms. Which he and his trained facilitators continue to this day. The basic perinatal matrices framework, thus, is the “map” of the unconscious that was distilled from the experi- ential reports of tens of thousands of experiencers over the course of decades. This map represents an understanding of the contours of the underlying patterns, supporting and molding our consciousness, out of which we act — constituting how we feel and forming the way we think ... about everything. These are grids or distortions which are like stained- glass windows through which we see and interpret everything in the world ever afterward, and in terms of which all our feelings and thoughts are patterned and painted. These constitute our Fourth Veil across Reality —

…psychology (Primal Renaissance: The Journal of Primal Psychology); as a psychohistorian, employing prenatal and perinatal dynamics to reveal hidden meanings and tendencies behind historical and current events; and finally, as a psychotherapist who has facilitated others in journeying into these realms, as well as having been guided myself to explore them, I feel I have a perspective on these experiences worth sharing.

The Basic Perinatal Matrices

The basic perinatal matrices are the conceptual offspring of Stanislav Grof. He, an M.D. as well as a psychiatrist, derived them out of the four thousand or so sessions of psycholytic therapy he personally facilitated. Psycholytic therapy involved LSD as a means to access and integrate experiences from the deep subconscious as well as the profound oversoul or collective unconscious. It is something he — while living in Prague — and a few others in the world were engaged in beginning with the discovery of LSD in the 1950s.

Grof refined these theoretical constructs over the course of the years. In the United States, his second home, he developed a non-drug modality to accomplish the same thing — the same access and the same healing.

Book One, The Secret Life of Stones

In Book One, my premise is that there is a secret life in the Universe and that the physical world is an illusion arising from our human perception. I propose that the fundamental reality is consciousness; more correctly, it is experiential. That matter, the physical world, is a projection of human perception thrown upon the formless is the conclusion of quantum physics and our latest consciousness research. Hence all that exists, really, is Experience. Matter is metaphor of that Experience. It is also message of that particular aspect of Experience that we leave out of our awareness in coming into Form, in becoming human.

The Material Veil

What we put into unconsciousness in the process of coming into Form becomes the physical world we experience as unalive and not conscious, though actually it is pregnant with experiential Divinity — Subjectivity, Feeling, Awareness, Bliss ... and Love. Correspondingly, the essence of the Universe is found in our direct experience of it, which is our essential Divinity.

These elements are near universally accepted among perinatal psychologists as unconscious forces, factors, matrices that exist in us all as a result of a human birth that is unique, by comparison to all other species, in its degree of trauma and hence of its impact or imprint on what we might call our “human nature.”

Since there is a good chance you are probably hearing about this research only now, keep in mind that entire new fields of prenatal and perinatal psychology, primal psychology, and to some extent, transper- sonal psychology and psychohistory have grown up around the existence of these perinatal factors. Entire modalities of healing tap in to and are based on the existence of this perinatal unconscious, including primal therapy, holotropic breathwork, and rebirthing, naming just the few that I employed in my psychotherapeutic practice. These unconscious perinatal elements have by now been confirmed by thousands of researchers and hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of experiential voyagers into the perinatal unconscious.

What to believe — as linked to religion, God, spirituality, mythology, good and evil, and much else — are rooted in the patterns of experiences we universally experience over the course of our lives, leading up to adulthood. Importantly, in this book, we look at the self-sabotaging we all do, at why we cannot seem to change those patterns, and, finally, what will allow us to finally be the person we know we can be but which somehow always eludes us.

Further, I show how peeling back the layers of that onion is ever more liberating, at every step. And where it ultimately leads ... what is ultimately true ... what is the center of the onion? We get much closer to that in this book, which takes us right up to the rim of cellular consciousness and the No-Form State. Cellular to Soulular, Veil Seven and Beyond.

The image that emerges through these works is your original face. And your original face is all these things — Divine, true, realer than real, more positive and loving than you ever thought you could be, and more wonderful and exciting than you can imagine. In the same vein as William Blake, I am saying that, when the Veils across perception are pulled to the side, everything appears as it is ... infinite.

The Perinatal Unconscious

Nonetheless, before getting into the deepest roots of evil and humanicide within the prenatal matrix — the prenatal Veil, which is Veil Five — that is laid down in us in the last trimester of gestation, we need address birth and its effects on shaping human personality and the beliefs which create the perinatal Veil across Reality, which I have categorized as Veil Four. For, at birth and before, we experience pain unparalleled in the world of Nature and other species. This vast difference is metaphorically represented by the story in Genesis, wherein we are cast out of the Garden ... no longer to enjoy and benefit from the harmonious synergy that exists in Nature. These perinatal imprints are the foundation of our beliefs and assumptions, they are the matrix out of which we act and see.

These perinatal elements have come to our understanding through the efforts of both the inner explorations of experiential pioneers into the perinatal, as well as the hard-empirical work of pre- and perinatal researchers. I might also point out that I, myself, have nearly five decades of experiential exploration into these perinatal elements, in addition to my scholarly work and research in this field. My experiences confirm, in my own mind, their absolute validity; as well as they validate for myself the theoretical constructs put forth by others to describe and explain them.

…and Your Real Self ... Adult to Toddler, Veils One-Three. This time, I focus on the ways the crucial events and experiences of our lives, particularly those around birth, the prenatal and the perinatal, create our assumptions about life, reality, religion, myth, and truth, as well as how they undergird and feed our motivations and actions. Hence, its title, Dance of the Seven Veils II: Prenatal/Perinatal Psychology, Mythology, and Your Divine Self ... Infant to Prenate, Veils Four-Six. In doing so, layer by layer, Veil by Veil, I continue bringing greater, truer perceptions into view of everything beyond and open up wider avenues of choice and greater fulfillment in one’s life.

I show in particular how our ideas about other people, our environment, our own unconscious or “within” — about what is important in life, relevant to oneself, and what warrants action and of what sort — are founded within the perinatal and prenatal experiences we experienced coming into the world. What to believe — as linked to religion, God, spirituality, mythology, good and evil, and much else — are rooted in the patterns of experiences we universally experience over the course of our lives, leading up to adulthood. Humans are the ones who suffer. Homo sapiens is the traumatized species ... the one with birth pain and fetal malnutrition. Thus, it is the neurotic one. Are you beginning to see how we might be the deluded one? The suicidal one, even?

Yes, we are different.

We are different; and what we find out is how that difference is what creates all our “advances” of “civilization” ... but also is resulting in an ecocidal, humanicidal plunge at the moment that will end all life on this planet within decades.

In Wounded Deer and Centaurs (2016), I went deeply into the specific experiences that commonly occur in the late stages of gestation. I showed how they have created the “matrix of human events.” I made clear just exactly why we have engaged in holocausts; wars; witch burnings; bigotry; greed and the creation of a dominant, moneyed elite; and environmental destruction.

This perspective and these findings of that work, continued here in this one, I believe are the missing element and the key to understanding the ills of the world and the human condition and to finally doing something about them.

…researchers in particular: These are Stanislav Grof, Arthur Janov, and Lloyd deMause.

I call on the findings of all three researchers in constructing my theories. You might recall my referencing Lloyd deMause’s work already: I touched upon the aspect of our development he brings to light — fetal malnutrition and hypoxia — several times in this work. That would be in Dance of the Seven Veils I. You will see how, soon, we go more deeply into those ideas.

Elsewhere I pointed out, bringing in research from anthropology and related fields, how this fetal malnutrition is a product of our standing upright — becoming bipedal — for that affected the configuration of our pelvic bones; thus, it affected a mother’s ability to give birth. This I did in my works, Planetmates: The Great Reveal, and Falls from Grace: The Devolution and Revolution of Consciousness, both released in 2014. More recently, I detail this in my book, Prodigal Human: The Descents of Man (2016).

I explain in these places how this fetal distress, the result of bipedalism, is the major difference between humans and all other planetmates. Humans are the ones who suffer.
