Lots to work on between yesterday and today! Wow.
Right now when Nivani words become plural they do change! The word particle depends what type of thing is being pluralized. Animals are -ii, humans are -aa, weapons are -vi, etc. Only applies if the amount is unknown

I wracked my brain for this one, thought the language might decline. But I don’t know if that’s right.
I thought it might be gendered, but it might just be an ungendered language like english that has endings to point at such (actor/actress etc.)

So I ultimately come away with being🪡

#Conlangity Day 9

We're deep in the grammar weeds now!

Today's question is: how do you modify your nouns, if at all?

Do they take different forms (changed spelling, added affixes, additional words) when they become plural? What about different genders or cases?

As usual, more info in the 🧵👇️!

Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 9
[GRAMMAR] Continuing the topic of NOUNS, let's talk modifications.

When/how do your nouns get modified? For example, if the noun is plural, is the ending different from its singular base form?

Do your nouns have different cases or genders?

Do they use articles, & do the articles change?

Light yellow text printed in two columns over an orange background showing a faint photo of a large open dictionary. Hosted by @professoremily.bsky.social.
Additional card with “HELPFUL TIPS,” light yellow text over the same background as the main prompt.

SINGULAR/PLURAL NOUNS
Don’t be afraid to get creative! Are there special forms for specific numbers? Are there any irregular plurals?
(e.g. child/children)

NOUN CASES
Cases are about the function of a noun in a sentence (e.g. as a subject, object, other). In some languages a noun may change form depending on its case.

GENDER & ARTICLES
In some languages, nouns have different genders that affect their spelling & articles:
La casa = “the house” [F]
El baño = “the bathroom” [M]
Articles can also be singular or plural (el/los, la/las), but not always. Some articles, like “the” & “a/an,” imply specificity vs generality:
“the king” vs “a king”

Compound words I'll revisit, but given that Siefan is meant to be agglutinative, I can work with that!

For example, we can have "Min nen pimi ytsa uhn haabynnal yogulunalan, Chiyo," which is "I didn't take your fresh tea and cookies*, Chiyo."

Stumbling through but bear with me!

Compound nouns: definitely. Put together in the order they would be in English.
Most relevant today:
🎂 Carshfeilith = Birthday Feast!
Carsh (birth) + feilith (feast).

Compound nouns are most important in BK for dates, geographical features and names.
E.g. Aélwaleth = Water Moon

#Conlangity I love this one, so might get off topic a little.

Shallin-ethray is built largely from compound words, (will get to examples later in🧵) but I think 2 is the limit for nouns, however 2 nouns can be compound with others modifiers.
Haven't thought about combining nouns & verbs much yet

You can. A lot of names are combined words.

#TheDragonblood: You can form compounds. The base word goes last, and earlier words have their inflections removed. We said possessives go after the possessed noun, and the same is true for genitives in general, but in compounds, the order is reversed.

#Conlangity Athan is made up mostly of compound words. There are a few base words - "Eda" for water; "Ikk" for flame; "Arn" for stone - which combine to form new words.

Cave is "Arnark", lit. stone home. Words combine together like this as needed.

An important prefix in Arca'raed would be 'cha', which sounds like a breathy 'ha'. As far as single words go, it would most closely be translated to the word 'not', like in the word 'cha’letig', pronounced HA-leh-teeg (soft g on the end): Cannot or can’t.
It doesn't strictly mean🧵

Ok this is a prompt that's actually a little harder for me to answer, but here we go...

Na'aqal is much more a fusional language than agglutinative, but it does use quite a few affixes to change meaning. It also does compound words, but usually no more than a 2-word combo...

#Conlangity 8. Suffixes and prefixes are very important in Kraslan, as it is an agglutinative language. There are many cases, more than I've created so far, but let's see some examples of when prefixes are used:

- To indicate the definite article (no indefinite here) 🧵

This is part that i haven’t thought out thoroughly, but i still have an answer. In Sun-Drop (so far) word enhancements can be created by doubling
I showed the example of Welcome (ko) becoming hospitality (koko) by doubling
I’m not sure if that counts as a compound 🪡

There are compound words that combine two or more common words together to form a common concept, e.g.: sun + to wake: sunrise. These are generally well defined, but there are limited sounds and compound words can get long.
There are some particles that are added to the beginning

Nummersil is highly agglutinative, with a lot of suffixes for cases, prepositions and so on for nouns and time markers and even sometimes personal pronouns for verbs.
Compound words are just glued together.
Anderra = world/land
Oranderra = the old world (our world)

So far, I haven't actually devised the transliteration of any of our popular compound words for the Kirrhin language, so here's an attempt at brand-new potential examples that I may keep or not.

In Kirrhin, compounding words is, 🧵

#Conlangity Day 8

This is gonna be a sort of loose topic day - do what you want with it!

Today is about compound words & other affixes. Can you combine words in your conlang? Do you have any examples? What kind of prefixes/suffixes exist, & how are they used?

More to consider in the thread! 🧵👇️

Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 8
[GRAMMAR/VOCAB] Let's talk about NOUNS - i.e. people, creatures, places, objects & concepts.
Do you have "compound nouns" in your conlang - e.g. streetlight, ice cube, wallpaper? What about prefixes & suffixes that alter meaning - e.g. "EX-wife, singER"
Try to come up with a few examples!

Light yellow text printed in two columns over an orange background showing a faint photo of a large open dictionary. Hosted by @professoremily.bsky.social
Additional card with “HELPFUL TIPS,” light yellow text over the same background as the main prompt.

Think about the rules of word compounds in your conlang:
- Is it usually just 2 words, or can it be more than that? Would the base word come first or last?
- Some languages can create almost unlimited compound words (e.g. German), and some can make whole long “sentence words” (e.g. Kalaallisut). Is your conlang that type of language?
-------------------
Prefix/suffix ideas:
- Showing chronological order (e.g. “pre-” & “post-”)
- Showing support or opposition (“anti-” & “pro-”)
- Showing a state of being (“sadness” or “brotherhood”)

#TheDragonblood: Draconoidic has SOV word order, and adjectives and adverbs preceed what they describe.

At least assuming I don't decide to make big changes from Nemorian, which is the assumption I've been working under so far.

#Conlangity

An easy day (tentatively, we'll see how it plays out as the vocab gets bigger)!

I'm continuing to borrow from Yakut's structure, so it is a SOV language.

While adjectives precede a noun ("a known yay!"), something curious I'm going to have to wrap my head around is where adverbs go...
