One sentence in a Dutch jurist's 1587 travel diary is the oldest trace of the hostile brothers legend at Sterrenberg Castle above the Rhine. The wall said to divide them is Trier work, not the brothers', and sources disagree on its date. What legend does your region repeat? #Castles #History

Château de Brézé is two castles. The white one above was remade in neo-Gothic from the 1850s. The one below was cut into the tuffeau: a dry moat about 18 meters deep, a guardroom with gun-ports, an underground drawbridge, a bakery, and working wine cellars. Down first, or up? #Castles #History

You can read both jobs in one wall. The north face of the Weckmund keep carries blocks shattered and reddened by the 1466 fire, and beside them the lifting holes the masons cut to hoist each block into place. Tell me which you find first. #Castles #History

They began as one fortress, seat of the counts of Nordgau. Bruno, born in 1002, grew up inside these walls and became Pope Leo IX, the only pope raised in an Alsatian castle. A marriage in 1080 split the hill, and each heir dug his own ditch. #Castles #History

Six deniers. A miller's debt of six deniers set off a war in 1466 between Mulhouse and a league of Alsatian nobles, and inside a day three castles on one ridge above Eguisheim were burning. Nobody rebuilt them. How the ridge came to hold three at all, below. #Castles #History

Friedrich Wilhelm IV meant the Orangery at Sanssouci to anchor a two-kilometer avenue in homage to Rome. What stands is a fragment of it, 304 meters end to end. 1848 ended the rest, and a decade of strokes finished the king. Come in autumn, when the citrus trees roll in. #Castles #History
